Shirley Rose Calvert-Smith, 87, formerly of Palestine, died Nov. 23, 2020, at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong. She was born March 22, 1933, in Flat Rock, the daughter of James C. Neely and Opal (Higgins) Neely, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Neely in infancy; and by two brothers, James W. Neely and Arnet “Woody” Neely. She is survived by her daughters, Karen Jo Hunt and husband Tony Ray Hunt and Toni Gayle Calvert and companion Raymond Scruggs; by her son, Danny Dwight Calvert and his wife, Eva Marie Calvert; by three grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; by her sister, Marlene Seaney; as well as several nieces and nephews. Shirley grew up in the Flat Rock area and was a graduate of Robinson High School. Though she continued her education at Vincennes Beauty College, much of her early life was dedicated to tending to her house and all those who called it “home”. Eventually, she entered the workforce, finding employment with a number of local businesses before ending her professional career with Dollar General, where she was a bright, familiar face for many years. It was Shirley’s wish to be cremated, and a private family graveside will take place at a later date in the Jones Cemetery, rural Flat Rock. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to “Ridgeview Care Center” to be used to help fund their activities program.
