Robinson girls tennis wins at Paris
Sports Editor

Dominant play in singles was enough to propel Robinson High School's girls' tennis team to a win on the road at Paris, 6-3, in non-conference play Monday.

"We were fortunate to get tonight's match in," RHS head coach John Ireland said. "Rain was all around us, but held out until the end for the heavier stuff. Tonight's match was full of some great matches."

In singles, Robinson won five of six matches to clinch the match.

Sierra Henry led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Lauren Swinford, while Bethany Avery rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Makenzie Tegler at No. 2. Taylor Grove and Shania Kirkwood also won in straight sets, with Grove claiming a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jessica Hopper at No. 4 and Kirkwood earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kelsey Daugherty over No. 5. Carolina Escobedo also won at No. 1 in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 10-4, over Mary-Hunter Smittkamp, while Madison Buchanan lost at No. 6 to Amanda Jernigan in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 4-10.

"Bethany and Sierra just played very calculated tennis today," Ireland said. They played great and it was very fun to watch them work. Carolina pulled out a great match at No. 1. She fell behind in the first set against a solid player, but rallied for the next two. Taylor and Shania both pulled out their matches, but had some back and forth play. Both figured out what to do and stayed consistent throughout the match. Madison played a different player than last time we met Paris. She played some very consistent tennis in the sets, but was unable to pull out the victory."

In doubles, Robinson's lone win came from Grove and Brittney Fuller at No. 1, as they beat Tegler and Swinford, 8-4. At No. 2, Marisa Koester and Melissa Jenkins lost to Smittkamp and Sarah Kenderdine, 3-8, while Brooke Taylor and Emily Harp lost at No. 3 to Hopper and Jernigan, 4-8.

"After singles, we switched up doubles to allow some other players an opportunity to gain experience at the varsity level," Ireland said. "Taylor and Brittney played at the No. 1 spot and were able to get a nice victory. Marisa and Emily moved up another spot than usual at No. 2. They hit some good balls, but Paris played a tough match and was able to place the ball very good. Brooke and Emily had a tight match also and was closer than the score showed."

Robinson also picked up wins in six of nine junior varsity matches played.

Lillie Hargis and Amy Watts earned wins in singles, while the teams of Lynnzie Tardif and Allison Kite and Abby Blunier and Hargis won in doubles, while Jordin Jones and Reagan Stephens won two matches.

"We played some great extra matches," Ireland said. "It is great to see the growth of our JV players. We saw some great play out of many players. It is nice to start seeing shot placement and disciplined net play."
