Lady Statesmen roll past SWIC, 74-45
Utilizing their strengths has been a key to success for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team recently.

The Lady Statesmen took advantage of their size, athleticism and depth to run away from a short-handed Southwestern Illinois squad Wednesday (Feb. 6), to the tune of a 74-45 whipping in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference contest.

"That was a good win," LTC head coach Scott Sparks said. "It was good to get some revenge after we let one get away over there."

Lady Panthers fall to St. Anthony, 56-37
Back-to-back regional championships were within the grasp of Oblong High School's girls' basketball team Thursday night (Feb. 7), but the Lady Panthers were unable to close the deal.

Oblong hung right with Effingham St. Anthony for three quarters, but the upset-minded Lady Panthers ran out of gas in the fourth quarter and suffered a 56-37 loss in the championship game of the IHSA Class 1A Palestine Regional.

"We hung with them for three quarters, but St. Anthony hit the shots in the fourth when they needed them," OHS head coach Tim Johnson said. "The girls fought hard, we just had too many turnovers."

Statesmen lose to SWIC, 78-72
Late-game struggles have bit Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team at times this season and they did again Wednesday night (Feb. 6).

The Statesmen were in control for much of their Great Rivers Athletic Conference contest against visiting Southwestern Illinois, but then saw their double-digit lead evaporate over a seven-minute stretch in the second half en route to a 78-72 loss.

"We had an opportunity to put that game away early in the second half," LTC head coach Luke Stuckey said. "But we had some bad shots and some bad turnovers and credit SWIC, they had some guys step up and make plays."

Lady Maroons lose to Teutopolis, 68-30, in Robinson Regional semis
Coming into Wednesday night (Feb. 6)'s game, Robinson High School's girls' basketball team knew the deck was stacked against them.

The Lady Maroons, seeded ninth in their 11-team Sub-Sectional, squared off with top-seeded Teutopolis in the semifinals of the IHSA Class 2A Robinson Regional and the game went about as expected.

Robinson found themselves in a hole early and never recovered, resulting in a 68-30 loss.

"Going into tonight's game it was no secret what the outcome was supposed to be," RHS head coach Sherry Bopp said. "We were determined to just enjoy our last moments of this year regardless. After looking at some scores on MaxPreps, I set a goal for us to at least score 20 and keep them under 70. Well...we had 30 and they only got to 68."

Lady Panthers beat North Clay, 47-40
Survive and advance is the name of the game when it comes to the postseason and that is exactly what Oblong High School's girls' basketball team did Tuesday night (Feb. 5).

The Lady Panthers shook off a slow start and a poor shooting night to hold off Louisville-North Clay for a 47-40 win in the semifinals of the IHSA Class 1A Palestine Regional.

"I told the girls after the game that was one of the ugliest thing I've ever seen, but they found a way to pull it out," OHS head coach Tim Johnson said. "You just have to survive and advance and do whatever you have to do to move one and we did that."

Panthers drop LOVC Southeast game to Cumberland, 59-37
Lack of offense continues to plague Oblong High School's boys' basketball team.

The Panthers were outscored in three of four quarters Tuesday night and only scored more than 10 points in one of them en route to a 59-37 loss to Cumberland in a Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division contest.

Round four was no different than the first three, as Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team rolled to yet another victory over Martinsville Tuesday night (Feb. 5).

After two wins in holiday tournament play and a non-conference victory, the Tigers picked up their fourth win over the Bluestreaks this season with a 63-23 win in their Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division contest.

Maroons fall short to TH North, 60-56
A valiant effort came up just a bit short for Robinson High School's boys' basketball team Tuesday night (Feb. 5).

The Maroons hung right with a bigger and deeper Terre Haute North team for four quarters, only to fall just short in a 60-56 loss in the non-conference contest inside the RHS gym.

"I thought our effort tonight was really, really good," RHS head coach Mack Thompson said. "We just came up a little short."

Lady Maroons dump Cumberland, 49-25
A solid effort defensively and an efficient night offensively added up to a big win to start postseason play for Robinson High School's girls' basketball team.

The Lady Maroons got consistent scoring for four quarters and held Cumberland to single digits in three of four periods en route to a 49-25 win in the opening round of the IHSA Class 2A Robinson Regional Monday night (Feb. 4).

"We wanted to pressure the ball and make them uncomfortable," RHS head coach Sherry Bopp said. "Our man-to-man defense was the big difference. We did a good job defending, especially in the second half. We also started making shots, which raised our confidence as well."

Lady Pioneers fall to Dieterich, 48-32
A fresh start and a solid beginning was not enough for Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball team to find the win column Monday night (Feb. 4).

Hoping the clean slate the postseason brings would be the cure, the Lady Pioneers played well throughout much of the first half, but faltered late in a 48-32 loss in the opening round of the IHSA Class 1A Palestine Regional.

"I thought we played the best we have all year as a team," PHS-HHS head coach Travis Blank said. "I felt like we got better throughout the season."

RHS wrestlers 3rd at Regional, 9 advance
Having nearly their entire line-up reach the final round of matches helped Robinson High School's wrestling team to a third-place finish at the IHSA Class 1A Robinson Regional Saturday (Feb. 2).

Robinson advanced nine of their 14 wrestlers to sectional competition, while racking up 167.5 team points. That placed the Maroons behind only Mt. Carmel (182.5) and Benton (174). Lawrenceville-Red Hill (104), Harrisburg (104), Cumberland (96.5), Fairfield (68) and Carmi (29) completed the field.

"Well, you can look at the final team scores and see that we had a chance to win it all, but just came up a little short," RHS head coach Joe Cunningham said. "All day long some of the other coaches kept saying to me that you guys have a shot at winning it all, but I just tried to tune them out and focus on each match. Turns out we really did have a shot. However, I am not disappointed. We had a lot of very big positives Saturday."
