Lady Statesmen split four games this week

Two doubleheaders resulted in sweeps for Lincoln Trail College's softball team earlier this week, with the Lady Statesmen coming out on the positive side of one of them.

Lincoln Trail opened Great Rivers Athletic Conference play Tuesday by being swept at Lake Land College, 10-2 and 13-2.

In game one, LTC trailed 2-0 after giving up single runs in each of the first two innings, then allowed four more in the fourth for a 6-0 deficit. The Lady Statesmen rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth to avoid being shut out, but then gave up four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the mercy rule into effect.

Lexie Simmons led LTC at the plate with a double and a run scored, while Jaedyn Johnson singled and scored a run.

Simmons suffered the loss on the mound, giving up six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, while walking one and striking out one in four innings. Samantha Johnson finished up, allowing four unearned runs on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

In game two, LTC fell behind early, giving up five runs in the first inning and never recovered. The Lady Statesmen then allowed eight more runs in the third for a 13-0 deficit before scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth to keep from being shut out. The game once again ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Brooklyn Koehler led the offense for LTC with a single and a run scored, while Erika Shroyer added a base hit, Julia Smith drove in a run and Taylor Bayer scored a run.

Shroyer took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in two-thirds of an inning. Bayer gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in one and two-thirds innings, Kiersten Inman allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and a walk without retiring a batter and Simmons struck out two batters in one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief.

The Lady Statesmen bounced back Wednesday, but had to go to a neutral site to do it.

The fields at Robinson City Park were too wet to play on, so LTC hosted Kankakee in a non-conference doubleheader at Miss Softball America Park in Terre Haute and came away with 7-4 wins in both contests.

In game one, LTC trailed 1-0 after giving up a run in the top of the second, but tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third. Kankakee regained the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth, only for LTC to break through for five runs in their half of the inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Lady Statesmen then tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and held on for the win.

Morgan Manning led the LTC offense with a home run, a single, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Bayer tripled and knocked in three runs. Samantha Johnson doubled, singled, scored twice and drove in a run, Simmons added a base hit and a run batted in, Julia Smith singled and scored a run and Shroyer, Koehler and Sarah Koonce each scored a run.

Shroyer earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while walking one and striking out three in seven innings.

In game two, LTC jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first, then added a run in the third for a 3-0 advantage. Kankakee rallied to tie the game with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, only for LTC to strike for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Kankakee pushed across a run in the fifth, but LTC was able to hold on for the win.

Jaedyn Johnson led LTC at the plate with a home run, a double, a single, three runs scored and a run batted in, while Bre Smith homered, doubled, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Manning singled three times, drove in two runs and scored a run, Bayer added three singles and a run scored and Koonce scored a run.

Samantha Johnson picked up the win in relief, giving up a run on three hits and three walks in two and two-thirds innings. Simmons started and went four and one-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two.

Lincoln Trail (6-14, 0-2 GRAC) was slated to play host to Olney Central College for a GRAC doubleheader Thursday, but it was postponed due to wet field conditions and rescheduled for Monday at 2 p.m.
