LTC splits games at Rend Lake

Two games that weren't decided until the final seconds went opposite directions for Lincoln Trail College's basketball teams Sunday afternoon at Rend Lake College

Lincoln Trail rallied in the fourth quarter to pull out a come-from-behind win in the women's game, 68-64, but saw a chance to win at the end of the men's game slip away in a 78-77 loss.

In the women's game, the Lady Statesmen trailed 12-10 after one quarter, 29-21 at halftime and 45-35 after three quarters, but they nearly doubled that output in the fourth quarter by outscoring Rend Lake 33-19 to pull out the win.

Still, the game wasn't decided until the final minute. Kelsey Mitchell knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner to take their first lead of the game, 58-57, with 1:26 to play.

Rend Lake would follow with a basket, but Jaylynn Brown responded with a three-pointer with 54 seconds left to put the Lady Statesmen up 61-59. Brown followed with two free throws with 43 seconds remaining, then Rend Lake followed with two free throws with 36 seconds left to make the score 63-61.

Mitchell then hit one free throw with 29.5 seconds left for a 64-61 lead, then after a Rend Lake miss, Brown knocked down two more free throws with 14.4 seconds remaining to extend the LTC lead to 66-61, while Rend Lake missed a three on their next possession and Brown added two more free throws with six seconds left to make the score 68-61. Rend Lake was fouled on a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining and they hit all three free throws, but LTC was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock to secure the win.

Brown led LTC with 26 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, while Mitchell posted 16 points. Hannah Boykin scored eight, Alaysia Douglas netted seven, Paiton Mangrum contributed five, Amber Hixon added four and Tori Combs had two.

Madison Buford led Rend Lake with 24 points, while Niya Danfort tossed in 21 and Dais'Ja Trotter netted 10.

In the men's game, the Statesmen trailed 39-33 at halftime, then stormed back in the second half to lead by as many as 10, 71-61, with 5:20 to play, but LTC was outscored 17-6 the rest of the way. The game was tied 77-77 after two Rend Lake free throws with 19 seconds left, giving LTC a chance to hold for a last shot with a chance to win.

However, Nasan Ayala stole the ball on the ensuing possession and was fouled as he tried to get to the basket with 0.9 seconds showing on the clock. He would then hit the second of two free throws to give Rend Lake a one-point lead.

Dante Combs would catch a long pass from Lamar Lillard, but his off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the Statesmen to a disappointing loss.

Alex Heath led LTC with 26 points, including five three-pointers, while Combs and J.J. Reed posted 12 points apiece. Tobias Thompson also reached double digits with 10 points, Lillard netted nine, Ahmad Price scored three, Eric Moenkhaus and Meeko Bond added two points apiece and Tad Kapek had one.

Keith Kiner led four players in double figures for Rend Lake with 22 points, while Tyler Winchester posted 17, Courtland Soll scored 11 and Ayala netted 10.
