Tigers fall short to Red Hill, 57-51

Redemption was on the minds of Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team Tuesday night, but a chance to claim it slipped through their fingers.

The Tigers led through much of their home game against Red Hill, but saw it get away late in a 57-51 loss.

Hutsonville-Palestine was looking for a reprieve after a poor showing in a 63-27 loss at Red Hill in early December and the Tigers played well for much of the rematch.

In a back-and-forth first quarter, the Tigers came out with a 15-12 lead, then opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to extend their advantage to 25-14 with 6:03 to play. Hutsonville-Palestine was able to extend its lead to 30-18 late in the period, but Red Hill scored the final six points to make the score 30-24 at halftime.

The teams traded baskets for much of the third quarter, with Hutsonville-Palestine leading by as many as eight points and Red Hill getting as close at two before a basket by Evan Newlin in the closing seconds to give the Tigers a 41-37 lead heading into the final period.

A free throw from Gary Higginbotham and a layup by Newlin extended Hutsonville-Palestine's lead to 44-37 with 6:14 remaining.

However, after the teams traded baskets, Red Hill ripped off 12 straight points to take a 51-46 lead with 1:19 to play. A basket by Newlin stopped the run, then after Red Hill scored, Adam Pickering hit a three-pointer to pull Hutsonville-Palestine to within 53-51 with 34.1 seconds left. Unfortunately, Red Hill would hit their free throws down the stretch to send the Tigers to a disappointing defeat.

Free throws loomed large in the game, as Hutsonville-Palestine made just 6-15 foul shots (40 percent), while Red Hill made 17-24 free throws (71 percent), including 12-14 in the fourth quarter, where the Salukis outscored Hutsonville-Palestine 20-10.

Newlin led Hutsonville-Palestine with 19 points, eight rebounds and five steals, while Kurtis Plew totaled 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals, three blocked shots and one assist. Gary Higginbotham contributed nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot, Pickering posted eight points, eight rebounds and one assist and Rider Lawhorn scored three points.

Anthony Jerrell led Red Hill with 19 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot, while Camren Ray posted 14 points, three rebounds, one steal, one assist and one blocked shot and Drake Allen collected 13 points, 18 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

There was no junior varsity game, as injuries for Red Hill's varsity team did not leave them enough players to play a JV game.
