LTC basketball splits at Kaskaskia

Road games are never easy in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and Wednesday night was no different for Lincoln Trail College's basketball teams.

The Lady Statesmen were able to pull away in the second half for a 79-67 win, while the Statesmen could never get untracked in a 63-57 loss.

In the women's game, LTC held a 20-17 lead after one quarter, but was outscored 20-16 in the second quarter and trailed 37-36 at halftime. The Lady Statesmen turned it up in the third quarter, outscoring Kaskaskia 26-12 to take a 62-49 lead into the final period. Kaskaskia won the fourth quarter 18-17, but it was too little, too late.

Although the Lady Statesmen were outshot from the three-point line (12-10), they made more field goals overall (26-24) and held a significant advantage at the free throw line. Lincoln Trail hit 17-25 foul shots (68 percent), while Kaskaskia made just 7-13 free throws (54 percent).

All 11 players scored in the game for LTC, including three in double figures. Kelsey Mitchell led the Lady Statesmen with 18 points, while Jaylynn Brown posted 11. Hannah Boykin scored 10 points, Tori Combs and Amber Hixon tossed in eight points apiece, SyAnn Holmes and Madison Beck each netted seven, Alaysia Douglas registered six, Alexis True contributed two and Paiton Mangrum and Jazmyn Ingersoll each added one.

Janiah Newell led Kaskaskia with 23 points, while Trinity Meadows was also in double figures with 11.

Lincoln Trail (12-6, 6-5 GRAC) will play host to Kaskaskia for Homecoming Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the men's game, the Statesmen struggled to score points, managing just a couple dozen in the first half and trailing 31-24 at halftime. The Statesmen did win the second half, outscoring Kaskaskia 33-32 over the final 20 minutes, but it was not enough.

There wasn't much separation between the two teams, as each of them hit four three-pointers, while LTC made 11-15 free throws (73 percent) and Kaskaskia connected on 9-16 foul shots (56 percent). However, Kaskaskia made four more two-point field goals than the Statesmen (21-17) to provide the winning margin.

Every player than saw action for the Statesmen found the scoring column, but only two reached double figures. Alex Heath led LTC with 12 points, while Eric Moenkhaus netted 10. Ahmad Price and Dante Combs posted eight points apiece, J.J. Reed scored five, Meeko Bond netted four, Lamar Lillard, Lathan Falls and Tobias Thompson each contributed three points and Tad Kapek added one point.

Austin Jarvis led three players in double figures for Kaskaskia with 15 points, while La-Quiem Walker scored 14 and Nico Johnson tossed in 10.

Lincoln Trail (15-4, 8-3 GRAC) will play host to Southeastern Illinois College for Homecoming Saturday at 3 p.m.
