County rivalry games are meant to be close and Tuesday night (Nov. 26)'s game between Crawford County rivals certainly was.

When the dust settled, it was the visiting squad that came out on top this time, as Oblong High School's girls' basketball team opened play in the Lady Maroons Thanksgiving Invitational with a 55-47 win over host Robinson.

"The biggest thing I take away from this game is we didn't have the intensity we normally play with in the first half, but in the second half, we were a totally different team," OHS head coach Kaydie Grooms said. "To see that growth and to be able to make that adjustment was a huge step for us."

"We are still struggling with chemistry and figuring out where everyone is supposed to be," RHS head coach Sherry Bopp said. "It's taken longer than what I had hoped, but I believe it will happen for us and we will be a better team as the season goes on."

The game was close virtually throughout, especially in the early stages. Oblong scored four quick points on a pair of Kelly Shew baskets to give OHS an early lead, but a 7-0 run by RHS made the score 8-6 after a three-pointer from Lucy List at the 3:50 mark. However, Oblong's Katie Cheek scored the final seven points of the period to give the Lady Panthers a 13-8 lead after the first eight minutes.

Oblong led by as many as seven early in the second period, only for Robinson to respond with an 11-2 run to take a 21-19 lead with 3:28 left in the half. A three-pointer by Cheek put OHS back in front, 22-21, but two free throws from List and a basket by Ella Florkowski gave the Lady Maroons a 25-22 lead and they would hold a 27-24 advantage at halftime.

However, Oblong seized control in the third quarter, outscoring Robinson 15-5 in the period. After a free throw by Bailey Strauch gave RHS a four-point lead, Oblong scored six straight to take a 30-28 lead, only for Robinson's Bri Robb to bank in a three-pointer to put the Lady Maroons back on top.

A basket by Madisyn McIntosh gave OHS a 32-31 lead, then a free throw from Robinson's Emma Goff tied the game at 32-32 with 2:58 remaining. Oblong answered by scoring the final seven points of the period to take a 39-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

Robinson opened the final period with a 6-2 burst to get within 40-38 with 6:07 to play, but they were unable to get any closer the rest of the way. Shew scored inside to push the OHS lead to four, then Genell Russell made a free throw and Cheek followed with a putback of a missed free throw by Russell to give the Lady Panthers a 45-38 lead with 4:58 left.

The Lady Maroons had several opportunities to close the gap, but were unable to cash in an still trailed by six when Russell rolled in a three-pointer to give the Lady Panthers a 51-42 advantage with 2:12 remaining. A Cheek free throw extended the lead to 10 before baskets by Strauch and Florkowski and a free throw from Catie Newlin pulled RHS to within 52-47 with 37 seconds to play.

Oblong was able to seal the win at the free throw line, as Russell his three of four attempts in the closing seconds to give the Lady Panthers their second consecutive victory.

"We still have a lot of work to do, but this win speaks to how hard these kids play and that they don't give up," Grooms said.

Cheek led OHS with 21 points, 16 rebounds, eight blocked shots and one steal, while Russell netted 10 points, three rebounds and two assists. Shew posted seven points and four rebounds, McIntosh contributed five points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots, Hannah Meese collected five points, eight rebounds and five steals, Darcee Pfeifer totaled four points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist and Carmen Worcester added three points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist.
