Crawford County had a 50-50 chance to bringing home the championship at the Little Okaw Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament Saturday (Sept. 21) and those odds proved to work out well.

The two local squads finished 1-2 in the four-team tournament, as Oblong claimed the championship and Hutsonville-Palestine finished second in the round-robin event held at Martinsville High School.

"We worked hard all day and never gave in," OHS head coach Pam Johnson said. "I am very proud of this team. They put all their talents together to become victorious."

"Overall, I'm very pleased with the way the girls played today, especially playing three games," HHS-PHS head coach Shandy Matthews said. "They are a good group of girls that work hard and stick with it. I see lots of good things with this team."

Both teams won matches over Martinsville and Dugger, Ind., which meant the head-to-head match between the Lady Panthers and Lady Tigers determined the champion.

Oblong was able to outlast Hutsonville-Palestine in three sets, 17-25, 26-24, 25-19, to finish the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.

"We had lost a set earlier to Dugger and we lost one to Hutsonville-Palestine, but it did not defeat us," Johnson said. "It made us work together even more."

"The girls played well in the first set, after that, I'm not sure what happened," Matthews said. "It wasn't our best game of the day, but looking to stats, we played just as good in the other two games. So the mental part of our game wasn't on like it should of been. They stuck with it, but just couldn't get in a groove to pull it off. We made mistakes when we shouldn't have and it caught up with us."

Jalyn Collier led OHS with 11 points, including four aces, 10 kills, one block and one dig, while Alyssa Potts totaled seven points with one ace, 14 digs, seven kills and one block, Kenzi McIntosh posted five points with two aces, nine assists and three digs and Grace Flexter netted four points with two aces and 12 digs.

Marah Matthews led the Lady Tigers with nine points on 14-14 serves, 60 good sets, 21 digs and three blocks, while Isabel Sheets posted seven points with one ace and 13-13 serves, 18 digs and 14 spikes with six kills, Ashlyn Matthews totaled five points on 11-11 serves, 23 spikes with three kills, 13 digs and two blocks and Paige Matthews collected five points on 10 good serves, 23 digs, 18 good sets, six spikes with two kills and four blocks with one stuff.

In Oblong's 25-22, 20-25, 25-18 win over Dugger, McIntosh led OHS with five points, including two aces, 16 assists, three digs and one block, while Collier posted five points with two aces, 12 kills, two digs and one block and Kelly Shew recorded five points with one ace, two kills and two blocks.

In their 25-14, 25-22 win over Martinsville, Potts led OHS with eight points, including two aces, six digs and four kills, while Hannah Meese netted six points with three aces, seven assists and one dig and McIntosh contributed six points with one ace, seven assists, two kills and one dig.

Meanwhile, Hutsonville-Palestine won both of their other two matches in straight sets, beating Dugger 25-11, 25-23 and Martinsville 25-22, 25-15.

Against Dugger, Sheets led Hutsonville-Palestine with 10 points on 14-14 serves, 14 digs and nine spikes with one kill, while Paige Matthews totaled five points on six good serves, 15 good sets, 14 digs two blocks and two spikes with one kill and Kelsey Hites netted five points on seven good serves.

Against Martinsville, Marah Matthews led the Lady Tigers with 10 points on 13-13 serves, 50 good sets and 15 digs, while Hites recorded six points with one ace on six good serves and Ashlyn Matthews collected five points on seven good serves, 13 spikes with five kills and nine digs.
