Panthers split pair of road games
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

Two road games netted entirely different results for Oblong High School's baseball team recently.

At Flora Friday (April 26), the Panthers grabbed a brief early lead, but couldn't hold in for long in a 12-5 loss.

After the Panthers scored a run in the top of the first, Flora came back with three in the second to take the lead, then erupted for seven more in the third to put the game out of reach. Oblong scored twice in the sixth to make the score 10-3, only for Flora to get those runs back in the bottom of the inning. The Panthers rallied for two more runs in the seventh, but it was too little, too late.

Nate Meese led OHS at the plate with a double, a single and two runs scored, while Conner Potts singled twice and knocked in a run. Jake Smothers, Hayden Johnson and Aydin Musgrave posted a base hit and a run batted in apiece, Brayton Akers and Garrison Powell each singled and scored a run, Jonathan Littlejohn singled and Zane Belford scored a run.

Meese suffered the loss on the mound, allowing three unearned runs on one hit, while walking four and striking out five in two innings of work. Johnson gave up seven runs (one earned) on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning and Powell allowed two unearned runs on five hits, walked one and struck out seven in three and one-third innings of relief.

Against Martinsville Monday (April 29), the Panthers erased an early deficit and pulled away for an 11-5 win in the Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division contest.

Oblong scored a run in the top of the first, but Martinsville answered with five in the second to take a 5-1 lead. The Panthers responded with two runs in the third to pull within 5-3, then plated six runs in the fourth to take a 9-5 lead. Oblong then tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to secure the victory.

Zane Belford led OHS at the plate with three singles, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Conner Potts tripled, singled and scored two runs. Jonathan Littlejohn singled three times and scored a run, Nate Meese doubled, knocked in two runs and scored a run, Jake Smothers singled twice and scored a run, Braden Thompson and Aydin Musgrave added a base hit and two runs scored apiece and Grant Kidwell singled and scored a run.

Musgrave earned the win on the mound, allowing five unearned runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out three in six innings. Littlejohn tossed the final frame, walking one and striking out one.
