Lady Panthers win, Panthers fall at Dieterich

Sports Editor

A fast start and a strong finish propelled Oblong High School's softball team to a double-digit victory Tuesday (April 2), while the baseball team made another slight improvement, but suffered its third straight double-figure defeat in games at Dieterich.

In the softball game, Oblong jumped out to an early lead and pulled away late for a 13-3 win in the non-conference contest.

The Lady Panthers opened the scoring with a run in the first, then plated five runs in the third to take control. Oblong held a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but Dieterich struck for three runs to get within striking distance. However, Oblong pushed across a pair of runs in the fifth, then scored four more times in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Harley Harrison led OHS at the plate with a triple, a double, two runs scored and a run batted in, while Aireka Burke doubled, singled and scored twice. Nyah Laino posted a pair of base hits, two runs batted in and a run scored, Kara Reider singled twice, scored two runs and knocked in a run, Abbie Dart added a base hit, two runs scored and a run batted in, Emily Bradbury singled, drove in a run and scored a run, Kenzi McIntosh singled and knocked in a pair of runs, Allison Miller singled and drove in a run and Hannah Meese singled and scored a run.

Miller earned the win on the mound, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and striking out nine in seven innings.

In the baseball game, the Panthers were able to double their hit total from their previous game and were also able to dent the scoreboard, but two big innings late sent OHS to a 12-2 defeat.

Oblong opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, only for Dieterich to score in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Dieterich took the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, but Oblong tied the game again with a run in the top of the fifth. However, Dieterich countered with four in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead, then exploded for six runs in the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Brayton Akers led OHS at the plate with a single and a run batted in, while Braden Thompson added a base hit and Conner Potts and Aydin Musgrave each scored a run.

Jonathan Littlejohn suffered the loss on the mound, allowing four runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning in relief. Musgrave started and went four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits, while walking four and striking out six, Grant Kidwell walked two and struck out one in one-third of an inning and Conner Potts gave up six runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning.
