Statesmen swept in DH at SWIC
| What was supposed to be two games turned out to be nearly the equivalent of three for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team in their Great Rivers Athletic Conference doubleheader at Southwestern Illinois Monday (April 1).|
After being rained out twice over the weekend, the Statesmen finally took the field Monday and decided they needed to play more than the 16 scheduled regulation innings. In fact, they almost played that many innings in game one. Unfortunately, none of those extra innings helped the Statesmen find the win column. Lincoln Trail forged a late rally to force extra innings before eventually dropping an 7-6 decision in 15 innings, then lost 5-1 in game two.
In game one, Lincoln Trail was facing a 5-0 deficit after giving up a run in the first and four in the fourth, but the Statesmen put together a late rally. A two-run seventh closed the gap to 5-2 before SWIC plated a run in the eighth to push the margin back to four. However, LTC rallied for four runs in the ninth, including scoring the tying run when Bryant Shellenbarger scampered home on a wild pitch with two outs and two strikes to force extra innings.
Both teams failed to score until the bottom of the 15th, when a hit batter, a stolen base and an error allowed the winning run to score for SWIC.
Bryson Bloomer led LTC at the plate with a home run, two singles, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Christian Bault singled twice. Rutger Poiry added a double, Carter Poiry and T.J. Janahashi each singled, Noah Reed scored two runs, Gavin McGaughey drove in a run and Shellenbarger, Tanner Robins and Corey Hall had a run scored apiece.
Jacob Craig was tagged with the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run with one walk and three strikeouts in two-plus innings. Conor Steinbaugh started and went five innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out seven, Brayden Burtch allowed a run on two hits and struck out three in three innings of relief and Jon McGee gave up three hits and struck out eight in four scoreless frames.
In game two, SWIC opened the scoring with a run in the first and added another in the third before LTC got a run back in the top of the fourth. However, that would be the only run the Statesmen would get, while SWIC tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win.
John Kehoe led the LTC offense with two singles and a run scored, while Bloomer posted a base hit and a run batted in and Janahashi, John Teolis and Carter Poiry each added a single.
John Cheatwood took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, while walking one and striking out one in three and one-third innings. Brady Bowling walked one and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning, Reid Brown gave up three unearned runs on two hits and struck out one in one-third of an inning and Kaunner Cleek struck out two in one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief.
