Tigers, Lady Tigers fall at Heritage
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

Double-digits were the theme Monday night, but that was not good news for Hutsonville-Palestine's baseball and softball teams.

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers gave up 10 runs en route to losses to open Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division play (April 1).

On the softball diamond, the Lady Tigers tried to mount a late comeback, but came out on the short end of a 10-6 loss at Heritage.

Hutsonville-Palestine opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but Heritage countered with four runs in the first, two in the second and another in the third to take a 7-1 lead. The Lady Tigers responded with a five-run fourth inning to pull within 7-6, but they would not score again. Heritage answered with a run in their half of the fourth, then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to secure the win.

Stephanie Rudd led Hutsonville-Palestine at the plate with a double, a run batted in and a run scored, while Marian Heleine singled, knocked in a run and scored a run. Izzy Sheets posted a base hit and a run batted in, Kelsey Lanham and Nestlee Cook each singled and scored a run, Drew York knocked in a run and scored a run and Lindsay Ryan scored a run.

Katelyn Wilber took the loss on the mound, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on seven hits and struck out seven in six innings.

In the baseball game, the Tigers never got going in a 10-0 loss to Heritage-Villa Grove.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Heritage-Villa Grove struck for four runs to take the lead for good. Heritage-Villa Grove plated another run in the fourth and then tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

The Tigers were limited to just five singles in the game, with Evan Newlin, Kegan Cooper, Levi Beard, Jess Newlin and Jebb Revalee providing a base hit apiece.

Brennen Burkett suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five unearned runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out seven in four innings. Evan Newlin finished up, allowing five runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in one-third of an inning.
