Another doubleheader, another split for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team.

The Statesmen played their third doubleheader of the season Sunday (Feb. 24) and came out with a split for the third time, as they lost game one to West Georgia Tech, 5-4, before rebounding for a 7-1 win in game two in a twinbill played in Hoover, Ala.

In game one, Lincoln Trail scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead, but West Georgia Tech countered with a run in the third and another in the fourth to tie the game, then plated two runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. The Statesmen responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to even the score, only for West Georgia Tech to push across the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Bryson Bloomer led LTC at the plate with two singles, a run batted in and a run scored, while Jack Gallagher tripled and scored a run. Roy Thurman posted a double and a run batted in, Brennan Martin singled, knocked in a run and scored a run, Bryant Shellenbarger singled twice, Jon McGee added a run batted in and Noah Reed scored a run.

Jacob Craig was tagged with the loss in relief, giving up a run on no hits with a walk and three strikeouts in an inning of relief. Dalton Laney started and went four innings, allowing two runs on one hit, while walking five and striking out six and Adam Kopff gave up two runs on three hits and two walks in an inning of work.

Game two was scoreless until the top of the fifth, when LTC broke through for a pair of runs. The Statesmen plated two more in the sixth for a 4-0 lead, while West Georgia Tech got a run back in the bottom of the sixth. Lincoln Trail then tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Shellenbarger led the offense for LTC with a home run, a single, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Gavin McGaughey homered, knocked in a pair of runs and scored a run. Gallagher tripled, drove in a run and scored a run, Thurman doubled and knocked in a pair of runs, McGee doubled and scored a run, Rutger Poiry, Carter Poiry and John Kehoe added a base hit and a run scored apiece and Bloomer doubled and singled.

John Cheatwood earned the win on the mound, allowing a run on two hits, while walking three and striking out nine in six innings. Reid Brown finished up, striking out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect inning of relief.
