Lady Statesmen roll past Shawnee, 57-37
Sports Editor

Strong play continues to be the norm for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team down the stretch of the regular season.

The Lady Statesmen picked up their fifth straight victory Wednesday night (Feb. 20), as they cruised past Shawnee Community College for a 57-37 win in their Great Rivers Athletic Conference contest.

A fast start gave LTC the cushion they would need, as they opened the game with a 14-0 run. The Lady Statesmen held Shawnee scoreless for more than four minutes to start the game, as the Lady Saints missed their first 12 field goal attempts. The first points for Shawnee came at the 3:46 mark to make the score 14-3, but LTC managed to hold a 20-6 advantage at the end of the first period.

The pace slowed in the second quarter and LTC got a little sloppy, allowing Shawnee to inch their way back into the game. Shawnee outscored LTC 10-8 in the period, but they got as close as nine, 25-16, late, before Andrea Adams knocked down a three-pointer in the closing seconds to give the Lady Statesmen a 28-16 lead at halftime.

Shawnee came out firing at the start of the third quarter, scoring the first five points to pull within 28-21, but LTC countered with a 12-3 run to take a 40-24 lead and they led 42-29 heading into the final period.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Olivia Bryant ignited an 11-0 LTC run to start the fourth quarter and extend their advantage to 53-29 with 6:10 to play and they coasted the rest of the way.

"We came out and shot the ball well early and we even had some good shots that didn't fall," LTC head coach Scott Sparks said. "In the second quarter they switched to zone and slowed things down and we got a little complacent, but our defense was still pretty good and that kept us out in front. We switched to a man press in the third quarter, which gave us a spark. It sped them up and created some turnovers and scoring chances in transition that helped shift the momentum back in our favor."

The Lady Statesmen overcame a poor shooting night, thanks in large part to Shawnee shooting even worse. Lincoln Trail hit just 19-56 field goal attempts (34 percent), including 14-40 from two-point range (35 percent) and 5-16 from three-point range (31 percent), but Shawnee made just 15-59 shots from the floor (25 percent), which included a 10-37 effort from inside the arc (27 percent) and a 5-22 showing from long distance (23 percent). The Lady Statesmen did have a big advantage at the free throw line as well, making 14-19 foul shots (74 percent), compared to just 50 percent (2-4) for Shawnee.

Olivia Bryant led LTC with 20 points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Taylor Bradley posted 13 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Adams totaled nine points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist, Emelia Bryant contributed six points, two rebounds and two steals, Britney Epperson collected five points, seven rebounds and one blocked shot and Jaylynn Brown recorded four points, three rebounds, three steals, three assists and one blocked shot.

Ra'Keya Jeter led Shawnee with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Kameshia Moxley posted eight points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist.
