It was one up, one down for local girls' basketball teams in Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division play Monday night (Jan. 28).

Oblong snapped a two-game conference losing streak by shaking off a slow start en route to a 54-31 victory over Martinsville, while Palestine-Hutsonville is still searching for its first win of the season following a 35-22 loss to Cumberland.

At Oblong, it was a tale of two halves for the Lady Panthers. Another lackluster start prevented Oblong from getting much separation, but they were able to turn it on after halftime. The game was tied 10-10 after one quarter, then the Lady Panthers outscored Martinsville 11-8 in the second quarter to take a 21-18 lead at halftime. Oblong continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Martinsville 18-4 in the third quarter for a 39-22 advantage, then OHS won the fourth quarter 15-9 to secure the win.

Katie Cheek led OHS with 18 points, 18 rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal, while Nyah Laino posted 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Abbie Dart contributed nine points, six rebounds, six steals and one assist, Maggie Cross collected seven points and four rebounds, Aireka Burke totaled four points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist and Kenzi McIntosh and Kim Nichols netted three points and one rebound apiece.

Emily Parcel led Martinsville with 12 points, while Lindsay Higgins was also in double figures with 11.

There was no junior varsity game.

At Palestine, offensive struggles again hampered the Lady Pioneers, as they were outscored in all four quarters and held to seven points or less in three of them.

Palestine-Hutsonville trailed 10-4 after one quarter, then was blanked 6-0 in the second quarter for a 16-4 halftime deficit. The margin grew to 24-11 after three quarters, then each team scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to reach the final totals.

Kaylee Pettigrew led Palestine-Hutsonville with nine points and one rebound, while Katie Draper posted seven points and nine rebounds, Stephanie Rudd collected four points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist and Megan Burton contributed two points, two rebounds and one assist.

Sage Carr led Cumberland with 15 points, while Zoe Mitchell also reached double figures with 10.

There was no junior varsity game.
