Maroons drop LIC game to Olney, 57-37

Getting opportunities is one thing. Finishing them is a whole other ball game.

Robinson High School's boys' basketball team did a good job with the former, but not the latter in Friday night (Nov. 30)'s Little Illini Conference opener and the end result was a 57-37 loss to Olney.

"We did some things we wanted to, we just didn't do enough," RHS head coach Mack Thompson said. "One of our big things is getting to the basket and trying to get to the free throw line. We did that, but it was a struggle there and it was our three best free throw shooters going to the line most of the night."

The Maroons never led in the game, but stayed close early until a three-pointer from the volleyball line by Olney's Dakotah Brown as time expired made the score 16-9 at the end of the first period.

Robinson responded by scoring the first four points of the second quarter to get within three, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way. Olney ended up outscoring RHS 19-9 in the period to extend their advantage to 35-18 at halftime.

The Maroons again showed life at the start of the third quarter with a three-pointer from Brayden Childress and two free throws by Chance Black to trim the margin to 35-23, but Olney countered with a 10-1 run to make the score 45-24 and they led 49-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

The margin grew to as many as 24 a couple times in the final period, but Robinson scored the final four points of the game to make the final margin 20.

Putting the ball in the hole was a problem for the Maroons, as they hit just 8-27 field goal attempts (30 percent), while also going 19-29 at the free throw line (66 percent). Meanwhile, Olney hit 24-49 shots from the floor (49 percent), including six three-pointers, while making just 3-6 foul shots (50 percent).

"It is what it is, but if we get three or four more defensive stops and get them down into the 40s and we hit a few more free throws and get our score into the 40s, it's a whole different ball game. But, credit Olney, they are a good team and they hit shots when they needed to."

Black led RHS with nine points and five rebounds, while Dylan Smith posted nine points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist. Kade Lassen also tossed in nine points, Childress contributed six points, four rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot, Ely Parker netted two points and two rebounds and Caleb Trimble added two points and one rebound.

Brent Hatten led Olney with 16 points, two assists and one rebound, while Brown totaled 13 points six rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Robinson did win the junior varsity game 49-42.

Ethan Shidler led RHS with 20 points, while Nick Weber tossed in 13.
