Upsets happen all the time in postseason play and Robinson High School's volleyball team had to work hard to avoid one Monday night (Oct. 22).
The sixth-seeded Lady Maroons were a heavy favorite against 10th-seeded Casey-Westfield in their first round matchup at the IHSA Class 2A Marshall Regional, but Robinson had to overcome an early deficit, then hold off a late rally to beat the Lady Warriors in two sets, 25-23, 25-20.
"We got off to a slow start tonight," RHS head coach Eric Dean said. "We were not playing at our pace in the beginning. We finally got it going midway through the first set."
Robinson fell behind early, trailing by as many as six points on a couple of occasions. Still trailing 13-18, the Lady Maroons rallied to tie the score at 20-20, only for Casey-Westfield to score the next two points to take a 22-20 lead. Robinson countered by scoring three straight to take a 23-22 lead, then Casey-Westfield scored to tie it again, but Robinson scored two straight to win the set.
In the second set, Robinson looked like they had righted the ship early, scoring the first seven points to take a commanding lead. However, Casey-Westfield slowly began chipping away and eventually evened the score at 16-16. Robinson never gave up the lead, however, as they quickly responded with five straight points to take a 21-16 lead. Casey-Westfield would get no closer than four points the rest of the way, allowing the Lady Maroons to hold on for the win.
"Sydni Bailey had a great night both offensively and defensively," Dean said. "Emma Bailey and Livia Smith both came in off the bench and had big serve runs in the second set. Lauren Weber and Gracie Shidler both had nice nights offensively and Amber Hillard and Jaedyn Johnson were also solid on defense. It was a nice effort by the entire team."
Emma Bailey led RHS with 10 points, including three aces and two digs, while Smith posted five points with two aces. Gracie Gower contributed three points and one dig, Shidler netted two points, 23 assists and two digs, Hillard collected two points, nine digs and two kills, Kenzie Wisdom recorded two points, four kills and one dig, Sydni Bailey totaled one point, 15 digs and seven kills and Weber added nine kills, two blocks, two digs and one assist.
