Strong showings from all entries led Robinson High School's girls' tennis team to a second-place finish at the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday (Oct. 6).
The tournament was actually played in two locations, as the tournament began in Paris, but just as the final round matches were set to begin, thunderstorms rolled in and everyone packed up and headed south to Robinson to finish the tournament on the courts at Washington Park.
Robinson finished the tournament with 18.5 points, putting them behind only Olney, who won with 20 points. Flora came in third with 16 points, followed by Newton (15), Paris (12.75) and Casey-Westfield (1.75).
"We were excited to finish second as a team," RHS head coach Steve Jenkins said. "It was a definitely a team effort today. No other team had players score as many points in every slot as we did."
Robinson's best finish came from the doubles team of Emma Goodman and Andrea Schalburg, who came in as the No. 3 seed and finished third with a 2-1 record. Robinson's other doubles team, Meredith Berty and Alysha Clements, finished fifth after going 3-1, while their two singles entrants - Mia Hargis and Sarah Staller - both went 3-1 to finish in a tie for fifth.
"Mia and Sarah won their first round matches in singles before losing to seeded players," Jenkins said. "They both then won each side of the backdraw brackets. Both girls had to play four matches today, but they kept their concentration and avoided making unforced errors. While both our doubles teams played well, they are wanting to step up their play for next week's Sectional that will be held in Effingham next Friday and Saturday."
