RHS girls' tennis team falls short to Effingham on Senior Night, 5-4

One too many matches went the wrong way Thursday (Oct. 4), spoiling Senior Night for Robinson High School's girls' tennis team.

The Lady Maroons played a tight match with visiting Effingham, but came up one win short in a 5-4 loss.

"We would have liked to get a win tonight, but Effingham is a well-coached and solid team," RHS head coach Steve Jenkins said. "I am really pleased with how much all of our girls have improved their play as the season progressed."

The teams split the six singles matches, with Emma Goodman, Sarah Staller and Alysha Clements each picking up a win for RHS.

"Emma, Sarah and Alysha all three played some of their best tennis of the year tonight," Jenkins said. "They played so consistent and limited their unforced errors. They did an excellent job of taking control of the points and setting up their winning shots."

Needing wins in two of the three doubles matches, Robinson was only able to come up with one, as Mia Hargis and Lucy List earned a win at No. 3.

Robinson did win the junior varsity match, 5-3.

Picking up wins in doubles were the teams of Esperanza Murillo and Laura Rios, Beccah Ludwig and Rebecca Henry, Amaya Brimberry and Emma Bogard, Maria Angel and Taliyah Batchelor and Sophie Watson and Staller.

"We were able to recognize our 14 seniors and all of our seniors were able to get to play a match tonight," Jenkins said. "It has been a privilege to coach these young ladies. I am proud of how they conduct themselves on and off the court. Their positive attitudes will be missed."
