Oblong's Chapman falls short of medal, finishes 10th at state meet
Sports Editor

A chance to earn a state medal came up just short for Oblong's Shyanna Chapman Saturday (May 19).

The OHS junior fell one spot shy of earning a medal, as she placed 10th in the discus at the IHSA Class 1A Girls Track State Finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

After tying for 10th in Thursday's preliminary round, Chapman and the other competitors had a chance to better their earlier throws in Saturday's final round. Chapman was able to do just that, but so did just about everybody else. Following her best throw of 114-4, Chapman came through with a throw of 118-1 on Saturday.

Unfortunately, that was still more than two feet short of ninth place (the top nine places earn medals) and well off the pace of the winning distance, which went to Stockton's Emily Offenheiser, who made a throw of 151-8 to claim the title.

In the team competition, St. Joseph-Ogden won the championship with 43 points, while Farmington was second with 36.
