Maroons falter late, drop regional title game at Teutopolis, 14-7
| Moral victories are not what a team wants, especially in the postseason, but, that's what Robinson High School's baseball team earned themselves Saturday (May 19). |
The Maroons battled tooth-and-nail with a talented Teutopolis team, only to run out of steam late in a 14-7 loss in the championship game of the IHSA Class 2A Teutopolis Regional.
"The score doesn't reflect what a great ball game this was," RHS head coach Reggie Truitt said. "We just ran out of gas and let the game get away from us in the bottom of the sixth. We were facing the top seed in our Sub-Regional, one of the best pitchers in 2A baseball, and came back to tie it twice. We came back from three runs down and then from four runs down."
After a scoreless first inning, Teutopolis drew first blood with three runs in the bottom of the second, only for Robinson to come back with three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from Lance Wesner. Teutopolis responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-3 lead, while Robinson pushed across two in the fourth, then got two more in the top of the sixth on Kade Lassen's two-run home run to tie the game at 7-7.
Unfortunately, the wheels came off in the bottom of the sixth, as Teutopolis struck for seven runs in the frame to put the game out of reach.
Lassen led RHS at the plate with a home run, a double, a single, four runs batted in and two runs scored, while Wesner homered, singled, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Cole Waggoner doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, Chase Johnson singled twice and scored two runs, Evan Hale added a base hit and a run scored, Brayden Childress doubled and Parker Johnson had a base hit.
Parker Johnson was tagged with the loss in relief, allowing six runs, only one earned, on six hits, while walking one and striking out four in three and one-third innings. Landon Roy started and went two and one-third innings, giving up seven runs, four earned, on three hits, with five walks and three strikeouts, while Cade Slaughter allowed a run on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Despite the loss, Truitt was pleased with how his team performed in the game and throughout the season.
"Overall, we had a really good season," Truitt said. "Our record doesn't reflect it, but we had a fabulous baseball team this year. We played a much tougher schedule than previous seasons for a reason. We played a lot of really good games against tough teams in our area. We're graduating nine seniors. That's a lot of talent and great individuals to replace and it won't be easy to fill their roles moving forward. They are a dedicated group with great leadership and camaraderie. Personally, not seeing them together everyday is going to be difficult for me."
Robinson ended its season with a 14-14 record.
