Seven innings wasn't enough to determine a winner in Tuesday (May 8)'s Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division softball game.
In fact, it took nine innings before a winner was decided and fortunately for Oblong High School's softball team, the Lady Panthers came out on the right side.
After holding a lead for much of the game, Oblong needed a seventh-inning rally to force extra innings, then the Lady Panthers plated a run in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 5-4 victory over Villa Grove.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third, when Villa Grove struck for a pair of runs. However, Oblong came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. The score remained that way until the top of the seventh, when Villa Grove struck for a pair of runs to take a 4-3 lead. Oblong answered in the bottom half with a run thanks to a two-out single by Samantha Johnson followed by a RBI triple from Summer Johnson to tie the game and force extra innings. Oblong then won the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI single from Madison Neeley with the bases loaded to give the Lady Panthers the walk-off victory.
Summer Johnson led OHS at the plate with a triple, a double, three runs batted in and a run scored, while Samantha Johnson singled four times and scored three runs. Neeley added a base hit and a run batted in, Nyah Laino, Harley Harrison and Bridgett Briner each singled and Kenzi McIntosh scored a run.
Camryn Travis earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs, two earned, on 10 hits, while walking two and striking out 10 in nine innings.
