A close match went the way of the home team Tuesday (May 8), which was not the result Robinson High School's boys' tennis team wanted.
The Maroons came up just short in their match with Mattoon on Senior Night, losing 5-4.
"We knew this was going to be a close match," RHS head coach Tom Buchanan said. "We have similar records and our line-ups are similar. We knew it might come down to a tiebreaker and it did. We were even after singles at 3-3 and we dropped one tiebreaker in singles, then we got down in doubles earlier before No. 1 and 2 came back. No. 1 doubles were down 2-5 in the second set, and then won 4 straight games to force another tiebreaker before falling."
In singles, Kaden Buchanan won in straight sets at No. 1, as did Lucas Blunier at No. 5 and Preston Ireland at No. 6.
With the match tied 3-3 heading into doubles play, Robinson needed to win two of three matches, but could only manage one.
The lone win for the Maroons came from the No. 2 team of Blunier and Lukas Baird.
"It was our last home match this year and two of our seniors picked up wins - Preston at No. 6 singles and Lukas at No. 2 doubles," Buchanan said.
