RHS boys, girls both 2nd at LIC meet

Strong showings led to second-place finishes for Robinson High School's boys' and girls' track teams at the Little Illini Conference Meet in Paris Monday (May 7).

In the boys' meet, a short-handed Maroons' squad left the meet thinking they had tied Olney for first place, but a scoring error that was found later resulted in the Maroons finishing just two points behind.

"Going into the meet without some athletes either injured or playing baseball, we knew we would have our work cut out for us even being in contention for the meet title, but our kids performed very well and I am proud that we were even in the hunt," RHS head coach Dave Holubek said. "Yes it's disappointing to be given false hopes, but I am still very proud of the kids. Our kids are tough and we will move on to the Sectional motivated to do well there also."

When the final results came in, Robinson finished with 101 points, just behind Olney's total of 103. Rounding out the field were Newton (94), Paris (89), Casey-Westfield (84), Red Hill (31), Marshall (23), Lawrenceville (20) and Flora (13).

Robinson was led by Alex Weber, who finished first in the shot put (46-4) and discus (136-5), while also placing sixth in the triple jump (37-4). Other winners for RHS were Riley Simpson in the long jump (19-11.25) and the 3200 relay team of Lukas Baird, Wyatt Bonnell, Zach Buttolph and Kobe Lorance (8:27.71).

Finishing second were Grayson Wolf in the 110 hurdles (15.24) and Lorance in the 400 (53.05), while placing third were Maverick Wright in the 3200 (10:51.46), Branton Scott in the discus (120-6), Gabe Shotwell in the pole vault (10-0.5), the 800 relay team of Kasey Cornwell, Trent Rodgers, Tyler Beard and Luke Tingley (1:38.52) and the 1600 relay team of Cornwell, Baird, Buttolph and Lorance (3:36.89).

In the girls' meet, Robinson finished with 107.5 points, placing them behind only Newton, who won with 144. Completing the field were Olney (80.5), Paris (67), Casey-Westfield (53), Red Hill (38), Marshall (32.5) and Lawrenceville (30.5).

Robinson had just one win from Amy McGahey in the triple jump (33-11), but had several second-place finishes, led Amber Hillard in the 200, as she broke her own school record with a new time of 25.71, eclipsing the old mark of 26.36. Also placing second were Hillard in the 300 hurdles (50.42), Lauren Weber in the triple jump (32-0.75), the 400 relay team of Ella Florkowski, McGahey, Weber and Hillard (52.14) and the 800 relay team of Florkwoski, Kylie Wolf, Audrey Maxwell and Daphne Phillippe (1:57.46).

Meanwhile, the Lady Maroons also got third-place efforts from Hillard in the 100 hurdles (16.55), Weber in the 400 (1:03.68), Julia Gallion in the 800 (2:38.93), Adriann Randolph in the 3200 (13:53.84), the 1600 relay team of Maxwell, Gallion, Phillippe and Weber (4:29.05) and the 3200 relay team of Randolph, Gallion, Andrea Schalburg and Phillippe (11:30.50).

"We had lots of season best performances," RHS head coach Shannon Goebel said. "The highlight of the night was Amber breaking her own school record in the 200."
