Close but no cigar was the theme for Robinson High School's boys' tennis team at the annual Robinson Doubles Invitational Saturday (May 6).
The Maroons came up just short in several matches, while winning just three of the nine contests they competed in resulting in a fifth-place finish in the seven-team field.
Each of the three RHS teams went 1-2 on the day, earning the Maroons five points and placing them ahead of only Newton (2) and Olney (1.5). Teutopolis won the meet with 15 points, followed by Effingham (10), Paris (9.5) and Mattoon (7.5).
At No. 1, Kaden Buchanan and Josh Rosborough dropped their opening match, then rebounded for a 6-1, 6-1 win over McDowell and Mayes of Olney before dropping their third match to end their day.
At No. 2, the RHS duo of Brendan Inboden and Will Hawkins opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ingram and Stephenson of Olney, but then dropped two straight matches in third-set tiebreakers and were eliminated from the tournament.
At No. 3, Robinson's Ely Parker and Trayton Tragesser downed Mattoon's Jones and Kaiser by default to start their day, but they lost their next two matches in straight sets to bring their day to an end.
"Nos. 1 and 2 had ups and downs throughout the day," RHS head coach Tom Buchanan said. "The ups - three times we lost the first set but fought back to win the second set. The downs - we went 0-4 in tiebreakers. Each team had opportunities that we let slip away. We had match points in two matches and could not close it out.
