Panthers, Lady Panthers beat Tri-County
| For the first time in two weeks, Oblong High School's baseball and softball teams were able to get back on the diamond Monday (April 9) and both teams were able to come up with victories over Tri-County in Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division play, albeit in completely different fashions.|
The Lady Panthers rolled to an 8-0 win in the softball game, while the Panthers needed a rally in their final at-bat to pull out a 7-6 victory.
In the softball game, Oblong jumped on top early, scoring three runs in the first to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Lady Panthers added another run in the third, then tacked on four more in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
"We played pretty well," OHS head coach Galen Slover said. "The kids were focused, we had a lot of good swings at the plate and we hit the ball hard."
The OHS offense provided more than enough support for Camryn Travis, who earned the complete-game win on the mound for the Lady Panthers. She allowed just two hits with no walks and recorded 19 of the 21 outs in the game via strikeout. She also caught a pop fly to account for the 20th out, while the only out she didn't account for was when Samantha Johnson threw a runner out at home plate to end the game.
The 19 strikeouts are a school record, according to Slover.
"Camryn threw the ball really well," Slover said.
Summer Johnson led the offense for OHS with a triple, a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Abbie Dart doubled, singled, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Harley Harrison doubled and scored a run, Samantha Johnson singled and scored twice, Nyah Laino posted a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored and Madison Neeley and Aireka Burke added a single and a run batted in apiece.
In the baseball game, Oblong trailed throughout the game until the final pitch, as the pulled out a walk-off victory.
Tri-County scored once in the first and twice in the second to take a 3-0 lead, while Oblong came back with two in the third to pull within one. Tri-County plated two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to make the score 6-2, but Oblong rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Zane Belford delivering a two-out, two-run single to give the Panthers the victory.
Kacey Cheek led OHS at the plate with two singles, two runs scored and a run batted in, while Belford singled and knocked in a pair of runs. Nate Meese singled, scored twice and drove in a run, Conner Potts and Tanner Otey posted a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored, Josh Bailey singled three times, Tyler Musgrave added a base hit and a run scored and Logan Richards drove in a run.
Cheek picked up the win in relief, allowing an unearned run without giving up a hit and striking out seven in two innings. Meese started and went five innings, allowing five runs, only two earned, on two hits, while walking two and striking out six.
