LTC baseball goes 1-2 over weekend
| Three one-run games resulted in one win and two losses for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team over the weekend and both losses came by the exact same score.|
The Statesmen traveled to Alabama for a series of games and opened with a 5-4 win over Meridian Community College Saturday (March 3).
Lincoln Trail started strong with a three-run first inning, then plated two more runs in the third for a 5-0 advantage. Meridian countered with three runs in the bottom of the third and scored another run in the fifth, but the Statesmen were able to slam the door and preserve the win.
Coby Taylor led LTC at the plate with a home run and three runs batted in, while Jacob Gonzalez singled twice and scored two runs. Jose Ramos posted a base hit and two runs batted in, Ian Heffley singled and Brennen Martin and Tucker Greer each scored a run.
Jackson Niehaus started and went two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on two hits, while walking six and striking out three. Conar Steinbaugh went the rest of the way, giving up a run on seven hits and striking out three in four and one-third innings to pick up the win.
On Sunday (March 4), LTC lost both games of a doubleheader to Lawson State by scores of 3-2 in each game.
In game one, Lincoln Trail scored single runs in each of the first two innings to take an early lead and the score remained 2-0 until Lawson State pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Statesmen took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Lawson State responded with two runs to score the walk-off victory.
Thomas Cessna led the offense for LTC with a solo home run and a single, while Heffley doubled and drove in a run, Julian Rivera added a base hit and Taylor scored a run.
Nate Thomas suffered the loss in relief, giving up two runs on three hits, while walking one and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning. Kaleb Huxford started and went six innings, allowing an unearned run on five hits, while walking two and striking out nine.
In game two, LTC again struck first with a run in the top of the second, but Lawson State answered with single runs in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead. The Statesmen evened the score with a run in the fifth and after two scoreless inning the game headed to extra innings. However, Lawson State pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth to pick up a second straight walk-off win.
Bryson Bloomer led LTC at the plate with two doubles, a run batted in and a run scored, while Taylor singled twice and scored a run and Greer added a base hit.
Zane Bechman was tagged with the loss in relief, giving up a run on one hit, while walking five and striking out one in four-plus innings. Nate Beavers started and went three innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and striking out five.
