Maroons split pair of weekend games

Results were mixed for Robinson High School's boys' basketball team over the weekend.

The Maroons continued their strong play against Little Illini Conference opponents with a 71-49 win over Paris Friday night (Feb. 2), but then dropped a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3) to Evansville (Ind.) Harrison, 76-41.

After a week off following the LIC Tournament, Robinson returned to the court Friday and shook off a slow start before pulling away for a conference win.

"Offensively, we did a nice job getting the shots we wanted, we just missed some point-blank layups early," RHS head coach Mack Thompson said. "We just told them to keep doing what they were doing and eventually things started going our way."

The Maroons led 10-7 after one quarter, but extend the lead to 30-20 at halftime, then outscored Paris 20-16 in the third quarter and 21-13 in the fourth to pull away for the win.

Nearly everyone got into the scoring column for RHS, led by Chance Black with 20 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals. Walker Sandschafer totaled 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals, Branton Scott posted eight points, six rebounds and two steals, Kade Lassen contributed seven points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal, Dylan Smith netted seven points and three rebounds, Brayden Childress collected six points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal, Alex Weber recorded four points, three rebounds and three assists, David Goble and Levi Hodge tossed in two points apiece and Jason Meeks added one point and one rebound.

Zach Burger was the lone player in double figures for Paris with 16 points, six rebounds and one blocked shots.

In the junior varsity game, Robinson lost 47-21.

Meeks led RHS with eight points, while Sawyer Hoalt scored five.

On Saturday, Robinson held their own early and stayed within striking distance for most of the game, but a late surge by Evansville Harrison put the game out of reach.

"The final score isn't indicative of how close the game was," Thompson said. "When we took care of the ball, we did some good things. But, there were too many spurts where we were careless with the ball and that led to some turnovers that turned into easy baskets for them."

Robinson led 5-2 early on five points from Sandschafer and the game was tied 13-13 after the first quarter, but a 9-0 Harrison run to start the second quarter gave them the lead back and they would not relinquish it.

The Maroons trailed 30-19 at halftime and that margin increased to 52-36 at the end of the third quarter. Robinson pulled to within 54-41 with 5:46 remaining, but Harrison responded with 13 straight points to make the score 67-41 before Robinson emptied their bench at the 2:14 mark. Harrison went on to score the final nine points of the game to reach the final margin.

"That's as good and athletic a team as we'll see," Thompson said. "But, that's why we play these games, to experience it and learn from it."

Sandschafer led RHS with 18 points, 10 rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and one steal, while Weber posted nine points, nine rebounds, one steal and one assist. Black netted seven points and one rebound, Lassen contributed three points, one rebound and one assist, Scott collected two points, three rebounds and one steal and Childress added two points, two rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.

Rilee Epley led Harrison with 28 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two assists and one blocked shot, while Robin Duncan totaled 12 points, eight assists, six rebounds, six steals and three blocked shots and Erik Smallings-Thomas netted 12 points, two rebounds and one blocked shot.

Robinson also lost the junior varsity game 49-42.

Childress led RHS with 10 points, while Goble and Hodge netted nine points apiece.
