Lady Statesmen fall short to VU, 50-45
Sports Editor

Strong play for three-plus quarters was quickly erased by a rough final period for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team Saturday night (Feb. 3).

The Lady Statesmen led for all but 1:03 of their game against Vincennes University, but unfortunately that stretch was the final 1:03 of the game, as LTC came out on the short end of a 50-45 decision in the non-conference contest.

"We had a great game plan and even with as many mistakes as we made, especially down the stretch, we still gave ourselves a chance at the end," LTC head coach Scott Sparks said. "It's tough because we competed our butts off and gave it everything we had. We just came up short."

Lincoln Trail was in control early, scoring the first nine points and holding Vincennes scoreless for more than six minutes. However, Vincennes responded by ending the first quarter on a 9-2 run to trim the LTC lead to 11-9.

The Lady Statesmen picked things back up in the second quarter, outscoring Vincennes 14-5 to take a 25-14 lead at halftime. The lead grew to as many as 16 in the third period, but Vincennes would outscore LTC 12-10 overall in the period to make the score 35-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

Vincennes then opened the final period on a 9-2 run to close the gap to 37-35 with 3:48 to play. The teams would trade baskets over the next few possessions before a free throw by Kaitlin Adams gave LTC a 42-39 lead with 1:34 remaining. On the next possession, Vincennes would miss two free throws, only to get the offensive rebound and get fouled again. This time, Oksana Fastova hit both foul shots to make the score 42-41 with 1:04 left, then Fastova would steal the inbounds pass and score to give Vincennes a 43-42 lead with 1:03 to go. After the teams traded offensive fouls, Vincennes would convert a turnover into a basket for a 45-42 lead and then added a free throw for a 46-42 lead with 21.3 seconds left.

Mykiah Jones drained a three-pointer to pull LTC to within 46-45 with 12.5 seconds left. Two free throws by Ashley Johnson with 10.4 seconds left gave Vincennes a 48-45 lead, then Adams appeared to get fouled on a three-point attempt on LTC's next possession, but no call was made and the ball went out of bounds to Vincennes with 2.2 seconds left. Two more free throws by Johnson sealed the game and Vincennes escaped with the win.

"We had a chance to end the game, we just didn't get the call," Sparks said. "I thought she (Adams) got hammered, but the officials decided not to call the foul."

Jones led LTC with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Adams totaled nine points, nine rebounds, two steals and one assist. Kaitlyn Howe posted eight points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, Kiana Wininger collected six points and nine rebounds, Bre Spalding contributed six points, five rebounds and two assists and Taylor Bradley recorded four points, seven rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot.

Ladellia Maggett led Vincennes with 12 points, three steals, three assists and two rebounds, while Marquitta Easley posted 10 points, five rebounds and one assist.
