Lady Statesmen drop 4th straight, fall 51-47 to OCC in GRAC contest

Another strong defensive effort was not enough to get Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team back in the win column Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Statesmen held their opponent to just 51 points, but they were unable to reach that threshold themselves and the end result was a 51-47 loss at Olney Central College in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.

"We struggled to find our offensive rhythm and get to the foul line," LTC head coach Scott Sparks said. "I was happy with our effort and defense. We need to get our confidence back offensively. I think we are thinking about it too much instead of trusting our instincts."

Lincoln Trail started strong, building a 14-9 lead after one quarter and holding a 25-20 advantage at halftime, but the Lady Statesmen were outscored 14-5 in the third quarter for a 34-30 deficit heading into the fourth quarter. Lincoln Trail got to within a point on a couple of occasions, but could not get all the way over the hump, as OCC matched LTC's 17 fourth-quarter points to hold on for the win.

"We just didn't make the plays we needed to make in the third quarter to keep our momentum going," Sparks said. "We have to put this game behind us and get ready for Monday's game. Its going to be a long week and it will be a great mental and physical test to see how we can handle three games in six days and prepare for finals to finish the semester."

The free throw line was a big factor in the game, as the Lady Statesmen attempted just two free throws. Although they made both of them, OCC was 15-25 from the free throw line (60 percent).

Bre Spalding led LTC with 12 points, while Kaitlin Adams also reached double figures with 10 points. Mykiah Jones tossed in eight, Shamarrhea Young netted six, Kaitlyn Howe scored five and Jamesha Pritchard, Kiana Wininger and Taylor Bradley added two points apiece.

Hannah Coleman led OCC with 15 points, while Haley Baxter and Allie Murphy each scored 10.
