Panthers go winless at Cumberland tourney

Pool play was not kind to Oblong High School's boys' basketball team at the season-opening Cumberland Turkey Tournament.

After a pair of lopsided losses prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Panthers finished pool play with a third one-sided defeat Friday (Nov. 24), as they were thumped by Charleston, 80-47.

Oblong fell behind 25-8 after one quarter, then was outscored 20-15 in the second quarter for a 45-23 halftime deficit. The margin grew to 62-35 after three quarters, then the Panthers were outscored 18-12 in the fourth to reach the final totals.

"Charleston came out and ran us up and down the floor and we just couldn't find a way to stop them," OHS head coach Ryan Cheek said. "Turnovers and transition defense were a killer for us."

Kacey Cheek led OHS with 18 points, while Nate Meese also reached double figures with 11, Jarrett Manhart and Conner Potts tossed in eight points apiece and Caleb Black scored two.

Darrell Phillips led Charleston with 27 points, while Dayton Simpson, Caleb Hurst and Chaz Acord scored nine points apiece.

In other pool play games Friday, Edwards County nipped Altamont 68-67, Casey-Westfield rolled past Dieterich 73-43 and Newton held off Cumberland 81-76.

On Saturday (Nov. 25), the Panthers looked a lot more comfortable early on, but a poor second half sent them to a 52-43 loss to Altamont in the seventh-place game.

"We came out fired up and ready to go and we felt pretty good taking a lead into halftime," Cheek said. "But in the second half, they executed their game plan better than we did ours."

Oblong held a slim 9-8 lead after one quarter, but then scored the first nine points of the second quarter to take an 18-8 lead. However, Altamont finished the period on a 9-2 run to trim the OHS lead to 20-17 at halftime.

The Panthers opened the third with a pair of baskets by Conner Potts to stretch their lead to 24-17, but Altamont scored the next seven points to tie the score at the 5:50 mark. A three-pointer by Potts put Oblong back in front, but a 6-0 run by Altamont made the score 30-27 with 3:01 remaining and they held a 35-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

A basket by Caleb Black tied the score early in the fourth, but consecutive three-point plays gave Altamont a 41-35 lead with 5:16 to play. A putback by Kacey Cheek and a layup from Nate Meese close the gap to 41-39, but Oblong would be unable to draw any closer.

Altamont answered with consecutive baskets, which ignited an 11-4 run to end the game and seal the win.

"We ran into some foul trouble and that caused us to be a little timid and not as aggressive on the defensive end, which hurt us," Cheek said. "Turnovers also continue to hurt us. Averaging 20-plus turnovers a game is not going to cut it."

Potts led OHS with 14 points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Meese posted 11 points, three rebounds and one assist. Cheek collected eight points, 15 rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocked shots, Manhart contributed six points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist, Tristan Sablone netted two points and six rebounds and Black added two points and four rebounds.

Mitchell Stevenson led Altamont with 21 points, 16 rebounds and one assist, while Alek Biggs posted 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Also Saturday, Dieterich rolled past Edwards County 73-56 in the fifth-place game, Charleston beat Cumberland 80-74 in the third-place game and Casey-Westfield downed Newton 71-54 in the championship game.
