Statesmen beat Indiana Elite Prep, 107-91
Sports Editor

Having a full complement of players made a difference for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team in their home opener Wednesday night (Nov. 8).

The Statesmen were at full strength for the first time this season and the end result was a 107-91 win over Indiana Elite Prep.

"It's nice getting that first win, especially in front of the home crowd," LTC head coach Luke Stuckey said. "That wasn't the same team we took to Florida and tonight showed what we can do."

Although the Statesmen scored seemingly at will most of the night, they had a fight on their hands throughout most of the contest.

Lincoln Trail fell behind 4-0 early, but a 12-3 run gave the Statesmen a 12-7 just over minutes into the game. Hot shooting from the three-point line allowed the Statesmen to push their lead to as many as 15 in the first half, before an 11-3 run by Indiana Elite Prep to close the half trimmed the LTC margin to 48-43 at halftime.

Indiana Elite Prep carried that momentum into the second half, using a 12-6 spurt to take a 55-54 lead at the 17:15 mark.

After the teams traded baskets, Ickson Masson knocked down a pair of three pointers before and after a reverse layup by J.T. Counts, helping LTC regain the lead at 64-57 and they never trailed again. That burst sparked a 22-7 LTC run that turned a one-point deficit into a 14-point lead in less than five minutes.

Indiana Elite Prep got within 10 on a couple of occasions, but LTC had too much firepower. The Statesmen pushed their lead to as many as 21 late before Indiana Elite Prep scored the final five points of the game to reach the final margin.

Lincoln Trail shot the ball well from nearly every spot on the floor, making 39-76 field goal attempts (51 percent), including 23-42 from two-point range (55 percent) and 16-34 from three-point range (47 percent). Indiana Elite Prep shot 42 percent from the floor (37-88), which included a 26-51 effort from inside the arc (51 percent) and an 11-37 performance from long distance (30 percent).

Stuckey was pleased with his team's offensive performance, but was not happy about their defense.

"Offensively, we shared the ball, executed, made the extra passes and that led to a lot of open looks," Stuckey said. "We know our guys can make shots when they're open and they showed what they are capable of tonight. Defensively, though, we've got a long way to go. We don't know yet what the intensity level you have to play at the college level."

A balanced scoring attack led LTC, with 10 players finding the scoring column, including six in double figures.

Masson led the way with 22 points, one rebound, one steal and one assist, while LeAaron Cain posted 17 points, eight assists, two steals and one rebound. Justin Williams netted 15 points, five assists and three rebounds, Kendall Jones contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist, Counts collected 10 points, five rebounds and one assist, Casius Bell Jr. recorded 10 points and two rebounds before leaving the game after he fell hard to the floor following a slam dunk in the first half, Chuchu Enechionyia totaled seven points, five rebounds, five steals, four assists and one blocked shot, Todd Smith registered six points, five rebounds and four assists, Lawrence Williams added five points and seven rebounds and Kyle Finch had four points, nine rebounds and one blocked shot.

"Our second unit did a really good job of working the ball and making plays," Stuckey said. "They gave us a shot in the arm when we needed it."

Tamir Green led Indiana Elite Prep with 37 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals, while Atik Koshi posted 14 points and five rebounds and Jordan Cardenas contributed 12 points, four rebounds and one steal.
