Lady Statesmen beat DACC, 65-46 opener, 65-46
Sports Editor

Opening games usually aren't picture perfect and Wednesday (Nov. 1)'s game wasn't, but it was still positive for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team.

The Lady Statesmen opened their season at Danville Area Community College and cruised to a 65-46 win on the road.

"We started out a little slow and out of sync," LTC head coach Scott Sparks said. "When we finally got our legs under us, things started to click. We hit them hard halfway through the first quarter with some scoring inside and out. Our press really got us going."

Lincoln Trail was behind just once in the game, 3-2, but finished the first quarter on a 17-4 run to take a 19-7 lead. The Lady Statesmen went four minutes without scoring to start the second quarter, but they were only outscored 11-9 in the period and maintained a 28-18 lead at halftime.

"Fouls hampered us in the first half, so we had to go to our bench a lot earlier than we planned," Sparks said. "Our bench really came in and held their ground and didn't allow Danville to gain much ground."

The Lady Statesmen were able to put the game out of reach in the second half, outscoring DACC 23-16 in the third quarter to extend the margin to 51-34, then outscoring DACC 14-12 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

"The second half we jumped on them from the start with our press and half court defense," Sparks said. "I felt like we held to our game plan and really focused on our defense in the second half. We really made it tough on them and didn't give up any easy buckets."

Of the 13 players that saw action for LTC, 10 of them found the scoring column, including three in double figures. Kaitlin Adams led the Lady Statesmen with 16 points, while Kaitlyn Howe and Bre Spalding tossed in 10 points apiece. Taylor Bradley netted nine points, Mykiah Jones and Shamarrhea Young each netted five points, Callie Clay and Lauren Hipsher added three points apiece and Jamesha Pritchard and Kiana Wininger each had two.

Kylie Vogel led DACC with 17 points, while Amari Brodie was also in double figures with 12.

"I am proud of the way everyone contributed," Sparks said. "We just need to build from this win and get ready for Saturday and Sunday at Vincennes."
