Lady Statesmen beat Rend Lake for 1st win, advance in region tourney

After a winless regular season, Lincoln Trail College's volleyball team is currently undefeated in the postseason.

The Lady Statesmen picked up their first win of the season Monday night (Oct. 30), as ninth-seeded LTC outlasted eighth-seeded Rend Lake in five sets, 25-16, 17-25, 25-17, 19-25, 15-11, in their opening-round match of the NJCAA Division II Region 24 Tournament.

"This was a great win for us, especially against a team that beat us twice in five sets each time," LTC head coach Dana Goodwin said. "The girls wanted this win and it showed throughout."

Mia McCoskey led LTC with 15 good serves, including five aces, 24 spikes with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Samantha Brookman posted 16 good serves with two aces, 22 spikesm with nine kills and nine stuff blocks. Rachel Graham totaled 16 good serves with two aces, 60 good sets with 27 assists three digs, Haley Towle contributed 16 good serves with two aces, 20 spikes with 10 kills and 11 digs and Baylee Baker added 45 good sets with 19 assists and four digs.

"Serving, hitting, blocking and serve receive was much, much better, especially serving," Goodwin said. "We had 18 aces and three errors. We had 56 kills for the night, 17 stuff blocks and 55 good digs. All in all, it was a very good game and a great way to start the postseason."
