It was one up and one down for local volleyball teams at the Little Okaw Valley Conference Tournament finals in Arcola Thursday night (Oct 5).

Hutsonville-Palestine rebounded from Tuesday night's Southeast Division championship match loss by defeating Cerro Gordo in the third-place match in three sets, 11-25, 25-19, 25-20.

"The first set is a blur, the girls just weren't in it and the score showed," HHS-PHS head coach Shandy Matthews said. "We just didn't get off to a good start. They didn't communicate like they usually do. We put the first set behind us and played better in the second and third set. I'm proud of the girls for continuing to play and not giving up."

Marah Matthews led the Lady Tigers with 12 points on 16-19 serves with three aces and 59 good sets, while Mandi Alspach totaled seven points on 11-11 serves with one ace, 12 spikes with seven kills and five blocks with two stuffs. Ashley Lowrance contributed seven points on 10-10 serves with one ace and seven good sets and Ashlyn Matthews added two points on five good serves and 26 spikes with four kills.

Meanwhile, Oblong fell in two sets to Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond in the fifth-place match, 18-25, 10-25.

"Our passing was not there tonight," OHS head coach Pam Johnson said. "We need to believe in ourselves and work together. When someone makes a mistake, we need to be positive, not negative."

Abbie Dart led OHS with five points, including two aces, 20 assists, one block and one dig, while Alyssa Potts posted three points with two aces and one dig. Kenzi McIntosh netted three points, two digs and one assist, Samantha Johnson contributed two points, five kills, two blocks and one dig and Summer Johnson added three digs, two kills and two blocks.

In the championship match, Tri-County downed Sangamon Valley in straight sets, 25-14, 25-21.
