Maroons lose on road at Flora, 43-21
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

It was another rough night on the gridiron for Robinson High School's football team Friday night (Sept. 1).

The Maroons were unable to overcome miscues and injuries for the second straight week and the end result was a 43-21 loss at Flora in Little Illini Conference play.

Robinson fell behind 7-0 after one quarter, but an interception return for a touchdown and a blown coverage on a pass play leading to another score put the Maroons in a 20-0 hole in the second quarter.

The Maroons did manage to score late in the period, as a long pass from Grayson Wolf to Tyler Beard set up a one-yard scoring run by Wolf and Robinson trailed just 20-7 at halftime.

Hoping to gain some momentum early in the second half, the Maroons instead went the other way. Flora would score on their opening possession, then a RHS fumble set up another score, extending the margin to 33-7.

The Maroons trailed 40-7 heading into the fourth quarter before they scored a pair of touchdowns around a Flora field goal, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.

Complicating matters were more injuries for the Maroons, including Wolf, starting running back/defensive end Bryston James and several linemen that caused shuffling up front throughout the night.

Robinson did manage 262 yards of offense in the game, but were still outgained by nearly 100 yards.

Wolf led RHS with 78 yards passing and a touchdown run, while Jake Servison ran for a 54-yard touchdown on his only attempt of the game. Beard had 72 receiving yards and ran for 47 more, Wrigley Young added 39 yards on the ground and Ely Parker threw a touchdown pass to Kasey Cornwell.

Dawson Goldstein led Flora with 191 yards passing and a touchdown, while also rushing for 61 yards and two more scores. Andrew Pearce added 56 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Owen Leib had 93 yards receiving and Dylan Bible added 40 yards receiving and a touchdown and 26 yards rushing.

Meanwhile, Robinson did pick up a 26-0 win in the junior varsity game Monday night (Sept. 4).

The game was called at halftime due to the threat of severe weather in the area.
