Strong performances across the board by Robinson High School's girls' tennis team netted the Lady Maroons a second-place finish at the Salem Invitational Saturday (Sept. 2).
The Lady Maroons won 11 of their 16 matches to total 100 points at the meet, which placed them behind only Newton, who won with 124 points. Centralia came in third with 91, followed by Fairfield with 46 and Salem with 40.
Points were accumulated by total number of games won, with each team playing each of the other four teams in two singles and two doubles matches.
Robinson won seven of eight doubles matches, as their teams earned first and second place finishes.
The No. 2 team of Meredith Berty went 4-0 on the day to finish first, while the No. 1 team of Emma Goodman and Mia Hargis went 3-1 to place second in their flight.
Meanwhile, both singles entries for RHS - Andrea Schalburg and Sarah Staller - each went 2-2 to finish third in their respective flights.
"All of the girls played some very solid tennis," RHS head coach Steve Jenkins said. "Meredith and Morgan were really communicating and playing well as a team. The girls realize as a group we need to work on cutting down our unforced errors, recognizing when we need to take a little off our shots and keep the ball in play."
