Kiger lone Pioneer to advance to finals
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

Three entered but only one remains after day one of the IHSA Class 1A Boys Track State Finals in Charleston.

Palestine-Hutsonville had three athletes compete in four events Thursday (May 25), but only one was able to advance to Saturday's finals.

Nathan Kiger advanced to the finals in the high jump for the second straight year, as he tied for first with a height of 6-2.

There were 13 competitors who reached the 6-2 mark, including nine in Kiger's flight.

Kiger has also qualified for the state meet in the 200, but elected not to compete in that event Thursday.

Meanwhile, Negus Bogard finished 17th in the 1600 and 20th in the 800. Bogard's time of 4:36.24 in the 1600 placed him 11th out of 16 runners in the first of two heats, but was a little over five seconds slower than the 12th and final qualifying time. In the 800, Bogard placed seventh in his heat with a time of 2:03.62, but he was just over four seconds slower than the 12th and final qualifying time.

Dawson Ferguson placed 28th out of 33 competitors in the triple jump with a distance of 38-10.5. That distance was good enough for seventh in his flight, but was still three feet short of the 12th and final qualifying distance.

Kiger will compete in the finals of the high jump Saturday at 10 a.m. at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
