RHS boys' tennis 4th at Sectional; do not advance anyone to state
| Every entrant for Robinson High School's boys' tennis team won over the weekend, but they did not win enough at the IHSA Class 1A Casey-Westfield Sectional to advance to the state meet.|
All of Robinson entrants won at least one match, but could not string together enough wins to move on, as the team finished fourth out of 11 teams.
"We were so close in so many matches," RHS head coach Tom Buchanan said. "If you make it to the semifinals, you qualify for State and we had two singles and one doubles team in the quarterfinals. However, we missed our opportunities."
The Maroons totaled 14 points, which placed them behind Teutopolis, who won with 29 points, along with Casey-Westfield and Paris, who tied for second with 16 points apiece. Mattoon finished fourth with 10, followed by Newton (8), Effingham (8), Olney (8), Charleston (7), Shelbyville (0) and Effingham St. Anthony (0).
The tournament actually took three days to complete, as it began on Friday (May 19) after a rain delay, then Saturday's (May 20) action was completely washed out, meaning that play wrapped up on Monday (May 22).
Robinson's best effort came from Lukas Baird, who won his opening round match over Effingham's Beck in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 and followed with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Olney's Atwood before losing to Randolph of Paris 4-6, 4-6.
Also in singles, Cameron Ireland scored a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over Olney's Brewer, but lost his next match to Esker of Teutopolis, 0-6, 4-6.
"Lukas battled all day," Buchanan said. "He avenged a loss from last week at the conference tournament in a very close match to No. 3 seed Atwood from Olney. This weekend Lukas turned the table and won in three sets. Cameron as well played his best tennis of the year at sectionals."
In doubles play, both teams finished with 1-1 records. Dillon Rariden and Kaden Buchanan opened with a win over Olney's Bettis and Stallard, 6-1, 6-4, but lost in a three-set tiebreaker to Charleston's Lutz and Gowin, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (4-7). Meanwhile, David Jenkins and Zach Clements began with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Effingham St. Anthony's Willenborg and Goeckner, only to lose to Casey-Westfield's Cochonour and Hacker in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 4-6.
"Dillon and Kaden played great in their first match beating a good Olney team," Buchanan said. "That momentum carried over into their next match winning the first set 6-3, but then it got tight. We lost the second set 4-6 and got down 2-5, but Kaden and Dillon fought back to win four straight games and take a 6-5 lead, but couldn't close it out. David and Zach played their best tennis of the year at sectionals. In the second round, they lost a very close three-set match against Casey - who eventually finished in second place."
Despite not advancing any players to this weekend's state meet, Buchanan was pleased with how his team played.
"We won three three-set matches and lost two three-set matches," Buchanan said. "We lost two matches this weekend by three points. If we win three more points, we are sending players to state and finishing second. In all, we played our best tennis at the end and we were close."
