Statesmen use long ball to roll past Shawnee, 13-3, in GRAC action
| The long ball was an effective weapon for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team Thursday (April 27), as they picked up their third straight double-digit victory.|
The Statesmen hit four home runs and scored 11 times in their first two at-bats on the way to a 13-3 victory over Shawnee Community College in a Great Rivers Athletic Conference contest.
Lincoln Trail opened the scoring with three runs in the first, then exploded for eight runs in the second to take control. The Statesmen plated another run in the sixth for a 12-0 advantage before Shawnee scored three times in the seventh. Lincoln Trail responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh to put the 10-run rule into effect.
Raul Hernandez led the offense for LTC with a home run, a single, four runs batted in and two runs scored, while Bryant Shellenbarger homered, singled, drove in three runs and scored twice. Coby Taylor posted a home run, two singles, two runs scored and a run batted in, Jordan Brewer homered and knocked in two runs, Tucker Greer doubled, knocked in two runs and scored two runs, Joshua Crispin singled twice and scored a run, Layne Peavler singled, scored twice and drove in a run and Austin Jones singled and scored a run.
Julian Alverio earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and striking out four in four and two-thirds scoreless innings. Mark Taylor went the rest of the way, giving up three unearned runs on one hit and striking out five in two and one-third innings.
