Maroons drop LIC tilt to Newton, 9-4
Sports Editor

A rough start proved too much for Robinson High School's baseball team to overcome Thursday (April 27).

The Maroons could not climb out of an early hole and ended up on the short end of a 9-4 loss to Newton in Little Illini Conference play.

After giving up four runs in the top of the first inning, Robinson came back with two in the bottom of the inning to stay within striking distance. Newton plated two more in the fourth, while Robinson got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-3. Newton then tacked on three runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Robinson pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough.

Ethan Williams led RHS at the plate with a double, two runs scored and a run batted in, while Cole Waggoner singled and drove in a run. B.J. Wright singled and scored a run, Chase Johnson and Morgan Beabout added a base hit apiece and Lance Wesner scored a run.

Brayden Burtch was tagged with the loss on the mound, giving up eight runs, six earned, on seven hits, while walking five and striking out three in five and one-third innings. Noah Davis finished up, allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out two in one and two-thirds innings.
