Sports Editor

All good things must come to an end and that included Robinson High School's softball team's winning streak.

The Lady Maroons saw their win streak snapped at 12 with a loss to Newton in Little Illini Conference play.

In a game that was originally scheduled for Robinson but played in Newton due to wet field conditions at Robinson City Park, the Lady Maroons never led after giving up two runs in the top of the first. Robinson scored a run in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half, but Newton tacked on a run in the third, two in the fourth, two more in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh to pull away for the win.

Laini Wright led RHS at the plate with a single and a run batted in, while Katy Powell singled and scored a run and Alexis Sullivan added a pair of base hits.

Kirbie Mendenhall took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs, six earned, on 11 hits, while walking three and striking out eight in seven innings.

In the junior varsity game, Robinson saw a late rally come up short in a 7-6 loss. The game was tied 1-1 after an inning, but the Lady Maroons trailed 3-2 after two innings, then Newton struck for four runs in the third to make the score 7-2. Robinson rallied for a run in the fourth and three in the fifth, but still came up short.

Alysha Clements led the offense for RHS with a triple, a double, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Sami Johnson singled, drove in a run and scored a run. J.J. Logan, Hailey Dean and Marissa Coonce posted a base hit and a run scored apiece, Addy Paddock, Madi Staley and Zoe Hall each added a base hit and Charlee Stewart scored a run.

Paddock suffered the loss on the mound, giving up four runs, three earned on three walks and struck out one in an inning of relief, while starter Jaedyn Johnson allowed two runs on one hit, walked six and struck out one in two innings and Dean tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
