Statesmen roll to sweep over Lake Land
Sports Editor

Offense was aplenty for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team Tuesday (April 25) and the end result was a doubleheader sweep over visiting Lake Land College in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.

The Statesmen combined for 24 runs on 22 hits on their way to 13-2 and 11-0 wins.

In game one, LTC opened the scoring with a three-run second inning, then after each team scored a run in the fourth, the Statesmen broke through for six runs in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. Lake scored again in the top of the sixth, but LTC responded with three in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.

The game was stopped after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Coby Taylor led LTC at the plate with a home run, three singles, three runs scored and two runs batted in, while Keaton Sackett singled three times, knocked in two runs and scored twice. Tucker Greer posted a triple, a single, two runs scored and a run batted in, Joshua Crispin doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored a run, Layne Peavler added a base hit, two runs scored and a run batted in, Jose Ramos singled and scored twice, Jordan Brewer and Keith Ellison each singled, drove in a run and scored a run and Raul Hernandez knocked in a run and scored a run.

Logan Teague went the distance on the mound to earn the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits, while walking one and striking out seven in seven innings.

In game two, the Statesmen scored in four of five at-bats - which included three home runs - and cruised to the win. Lincoln Trail scored a run in the first, two in the third, five in the fourth and three more in the fifth to bring the 10-run rule into effect.

Shellenbarger led the offense for LTC with a home run, a single, three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Greer homered, scored three runs and drove in a pair. Hernandez homered and knocked in two runs, Peavler tripled, drove in three runs and scored a run, Brewer added a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored, Ramos singled and scored a run and Sackett and Crispin each scored a run.

Jared Wilson picked up the complete-game win on the mound, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out seven in five innings.
