Lady Maroons win Route 1 Showdown
| The beat rolled on for Robinson High School's softball team Saturday (April 15), as they picked up their eighth and ninth straight wins on their way to capturing the Route 1 Showdown title at Paris.|
Robinson cruised past Georgetown-Ridge Farm, 16-5, in their opener, then downed Marshall, 5-2, in the championship game.
Against Georgetown-Ridge Farm, the game was tied 2-2 after one inning of play, but Robinson took control with a five-run third inning. The Lady Maroons plated two more runs in the fourth for a 9-2 advantage before Georgetown-Ridge Farm struck for three runs in the fifth to make the score 9-5. Robinson answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, then broke through for five more in the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Malia Gunn led the RHS offense with two home runs (her eighth and ninth of the season), a double, a single, four runs batted in and four runs scored, while Alexis Sullivan homered, doubled, singled, drove in three runs and scored three times. Kirbie Mendenhall posted a triple, a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored, Katy Powell doubled, singled twice, knocked in a pair of runs and scored a run, Laini Wright added three singles, three runs batted in and two runs scored, Jaedyn Johnson singled twice and scored a run, Alison Sanders singled, drove in a run and scored a run, Shawna Windham singled and scored a run, Alexis Middleton had a base hit and Alison Austin scored a run.
Mendenhall picked up the win on the mound, allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits, while walking four and striking out nine in six innings.
In the title game, Robinson plated single runs in each of the first two innings to take an early lead, but Marshall responded with two in the bottom of the second to tie the game. The Lady Maroons regained the lead with a three-run fourth and were able to make it stand up.
Gunn again led RHS at the plate with two singles, two runs batted in and a run scored, while Katelynn Smith singled twice and scored a run. Powell posted a base hit and two runs batted in, Sullivan singled, scored twice and knocked in a run, Anna Jones added a double, Mendenhall and Windham each had a single and Sanders scored a run.
Tess Krause earned the win on the mound, giving up two unearned runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out two in five and one-third innings. Mendenhall finished up, allowing two hits and striking out two in one and two-thirds innings to register the save.
