A strong showing in a deep field helped Robinson High School's girls' track team to a third-place finish in the annual Sam Bennett Invitational at RHS Friday (April 14).
The Lady Maroons did not win any events, but recorded several top-five finishes on their way to scoring 59 points. That placed them behind only Teutopolis, who won with 112 points and Newton, who was second with 91. Neoga came in fourth with 51, followed by Shelbyville (46.5), Cowden-Herrick-Beecher City (44), Olney (38), Benton (32), Cumberland (28), Brownstown-St. Elmo (23), Paris (15), Altamont (8), Palestine-Hutsonville (6.5), Red Hill (4) and Lawrenceville (0).
Top finishers for RHS included Sydney Beard, who was second in the 300 hurdles (50.31) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.66), Amber Hillard with a second-place effort in the 200 (27.24), fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles (16.84) and sixth-place finish in the 100 (13.40) and Amy McGahey, who was second in the triple jump (33-9) and sixth in the long jump (14-5.25).
Finishing third was the 400 relay team of Beard, McGahey, Lauren Weber and Hillard (51.73) and Weber in the 400 (1:04.68), while Weber also finished fourth in the triple jump (31-0.5), as did Daphne Phillippe in the shot put (35-5).
Other fifth-place finishers included Andrea Schalburg in the 1600 (6:30), Abby Chipman in the high jump (4-11) and the 3200 relay team of Schalburg, Annie Hays, Phillippe and Gracie Shidler (11:49.18), while also finishing sixth was the 1600 relay team of Beard, Laura Rios, Phillippe and Weber (4:39.34).
For Palestine-Hutsonville, Kendra Biggs and Summer Agan both scored in the shot put and discus, with Biggs placing fifth in both events (35-3 and 93-2) and Agan finishing sixth in both events (34-6.5 and 92-0). Also scoring for the Lady Pioneers was Mandi Alspach with a sixth-place effort in the high jump (4-9).
