A better performance than the week before was still not enough to get Oblong High School's football team back in the win column Friday Night.
The Panthers battled tooth and nail with visiting Marshall, but still came out on the short end of a 20-13 decision at Ron Welsh field.
"It was a good ball game," OHS head coach Travis Reider said. "We played a lot better than we did against Palestine-Hutsonville. The kids fought hard, but Marshall just made a few more plays than we did."
Marshall opened the scoring late in the first quarter, when quarterback Travis Adams scampered for an 18-yard touchdown run to give the Lions a 6-0 lead.
Oblong answered at the 8:44 mark of the second quarter, when Alec Jacobs tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kurtis Fleek, then Hunter Goodwin added the extra point to put the Panthers on top, 7-6.
Marshall responded with 33 seconds left before halftime, as Adams threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Nick Scott, then ran in the two-point conversion to put the Lions in front at halftime, 14-7.
Adams then added an eight-yard touchdown run with 6:56 left in the third quarter to extend Marshall's lead to 20-7.
Oblong countered just over a minute later, as Fleek broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 20-13, but the Panthers would not score again, allowing Marshall to hold on for the win.
"Our defense played tremendous tonight, but our offense struggled a bit," Reider said.
The Panthers totaled just 217 yards of offense, with 143 of that coming on the ground and just 74 through the air.
Marshall was just a tad better with 221 total yards, including 159 rushing and 62 passing.
Jacobs completed 8-22 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers and ran times for 38 yards, but he also threw three interceptions. Fleek had two rushes for 49 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 18 yards and another score, Logan Goodwin led Oblong on the ground with 56 yards on 13 attempts and Jared Mayhew caught three passes for 35 yards.
Adams led Marshall with 69 yards rushing and two touchdowns in 25 attempts, while also completing 6-10 passes for 62 yards and another score. Scott caught four passes for 53 yards and a touchdown and Chad Leitch added 48 yards rushing on 11 carries.
With the loss, Oblong was officially eliminated from postseason contention, but Reider said his team is only looking forward and wants to end the season on a positive note.
"The most important thing now is to send the seniors out with a win Friday night," Reider said.
Oblong (3-5) will play host to Flora for their final game of the season Friday at 7 p.m.
