Little Illini All-Stars crush NTC, 80-55
JOSH BROWN

The best the Little Illini and National Trail had to offer did battle for area conference supremacy Saturday night at Waldrip Gym in Toledo, but one team reigned supreme when it was all said and done.

The Little Illini Conference all-stars had too much firepower for their NTC counterparts and rolled to an 80-55 win in the 20th annual Central Illinois All-Star game at Cumberland High School.

Sparked by a pair of Crawford County players, the LIC raced out to a 6-0 lead at the start and never trailed in the contest.

Robinson's Derrick Nicholas scored the first basket of the game, finishing a feed from RHS teammate Aaron Siler for a layup, then after a steal and layup by Casey-Westfield's Trivette Scales, Oblong's Anthony Johnson tipped in a Nicholas miss to put the LIC up 6-0.

After the NTC scored four straight points, the LIC countered with a 14-4 run to take a 20-8 lead and they never looked back.

A three-point barrage by the LIC took place over the final eight minutes of the first half, as six of their final seven field goals came from long range, including three from Siler, one of which was just inside the volleyball right before the half, which gave the LIC a 42-21 advantage at halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half, as a 10-2 LIC run early pushed the lead to its biggest of the game, 52-25, with 17:30 to play. The lead dipped below 20 only twice the rest of the way, with the closest being 17, 72-55, with 1:33 remaining, before the LIC scored the final eight points of the game to complete the 25-point win.

Leading the way for the LIC was Scales with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Cumberland's Trevor Brumleve was also in double figures with 10 points, four rebounds and one steal. Siler totaled nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals on his way to earning MVP honors, while Johnson posted seven points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots and Nicholas added four points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists.

Effingham St. Anthony's Jacob Schuette earned MVP honors for the NTC with 12 points, eight rebounds and one steal, while Dieterich's Dalton Hinterscher posted nine points, five rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot and Stewardson-Strasburg's Justin Fulk netted eight points, four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.

Hinterscher also won the three-point contest by nailing 13-15 shots in the final round.

The victory was the second straight for the LIC in the series, but they still trail in all-time victories, 14-6.
