Statesmen swept by Wabash Valley

The bats were as cold as the weather for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team over the weekend.

Lincoln Trail mustered just three runs in three games, as they were swept by Wabash Valley College in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.

On Friday in Mt. Carmel, Wabash Valley scored a run in the first inning, then tacked on another in the seventh on their way to a 2-0 victory.

The Statesmen had six hits in the game, but all of them were singles. Diamyn Hall led the way for LTC with two hits, while Andrew Solliday, Brian Solliday, Scott West and Matt Rodgers had a base hit apiece.

Josh Weisman took the loss on the mound, giving up two runs on six hits, while walking five and striking out four in seven innings of work. Ryan Wells tossed a perfect inning of relief, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

At Robinson Saturday, the Statesmen got on the scoreboard in both games, but still dropped both ends of the doubleheader, 8-1 and 9-2.

In game one, Lincoln Trail struck first with a run in their first at-bat, but Wabash Valley tied the game with a run in the third, then took the lead for good with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Wabash Valley added three runs in the sixth for a 6-1 advantage, then tacked on two more in the eighth to pull away for the win.

Rodgers led LTC at the plate with a double and a run batted in, while Max Cain doubled and scored a run. Austin Lewis added pair of singles for LTC and Brian Solliday and Connor Robinson each had a base hit.

Tyler Wells was tagged with the loss on the mound, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings. He also walked three and struck out one. Kodie Girton tossed three innings of relief, allowing five runs on one hit, while walking four and striking out two and Clay Hampton retired all three batters he faced in a scoreless inning of relief.

In game two, Wabash Valley scored a run in the top of the first, but LTC tied the game with a run in the second. Wabash Valley took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth, then added one in the fifth and five more in the sixth for a 9-1 advantage. The Statesmen pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to complete the scoring.

Brian Solliday led the LTC offense with a triple and a run scored, while Andrew Solliday singled twice and scored a run. Ryder Brannon and West each added a hit and Robinson drove in a run.

Eric Stapleton suffered the loss, even though he did not allow a hit in three and one-third innings. He allowed nine walks and three runs while on the mound and struck out three batters. Jimmy Lough gave up six runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in two innings of relief, while Zach Dowden struck out two in one and two-thirds innings of relief.
