Statesmen win Sunday, avoid sweep
| What started as a rough weekend ended on a positive note for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team.|
The Statesmen avoided a weekend sweep by rallying past Rend Lake, 7-5, to salvage the third game of their Great Rivers Athletic Conference series.
Lincoln Trail opened the weekend by losing both ends of a doubleheader at Rend Lake Saturday, 10-0 and 9-3.
In game one, the Statesmen allowed six runs in the second inning to dig an early hole, then Rend Lake tacked on four runs in the bottom of the seventh to win by the 10-run rule.
Andrew Solliday had the lone extra base hit for LTC with a double, while Mike Konyensi singled twice. Max Cain, Matt Rodgers and Austin Lewis added a base hit apiece for the Statesmen.
Rodgers suffered the loss on the mound, allowing six unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two in two innings. Eric Stapleton finished up, giving up four runs on four hits, while walking five and striking out three in four and two-thirds innings of relief.
In the second game, Lincoln Trail again gave up six runs in the second inning and then three more in the third to dig a 9-0 hole and never recovered. The Statesmen finally got on the board by scoring three times in the fourth, but could not get any closer.
Andrew Solliday and Justin Watts led the LTC offense with a base hit and a run batted in apiece, while Rodgers singled twice and scored a run. Connor Walters added a base hit and a run scored, Konyensi singled twice, Ryder Brannon, Brayden Freeman and A.J. Hyatt each had a base hit, Scott West drove in a run and Nickoli Kimmel scored a run.
Tyler Wells took the loss on the mound, giving up six runs three hits in one and one-third innings. Jimmy Lough allowed three unearned runs on two hits with one strikeout in one and two-thirds innings, Kodie Girton worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two and Clay Hampton gave up one hit and one walk in a scoreless inning of relief.
On Sunday, Rend Lake scored once in the second and twice in the third to grab a 3-0 lead, but LTC came back with two runs in the fourth to close the gap to 3-2. Rend Lake added a run in the fifth for a 4-2 lead, but Lincoln Trail broke through for four runs in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. Rend Lake closed to within 6-5 with a run in the top of the eighth, but the Statesmen scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning and held on for the win.
Rodgers powered the LTC offense with two home runs, five runs batted in and two runs scored, while Diamyn Hall posted a base hit, two runs batted in and a run scored. Brian Solliday doubled and scored two runs, Connor Robinson singled and scored a run, Andrew Solliday added a base hit and Konyensi scored a run.
Ryan Wells earned the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits, while walking one and striking out three in four innings. Josh Weisman started and went five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
